    • A real-time pulse parameter estimator is disclosed herein. In one embodiment, an apparatus has pulse detection logic, an abnormal pulse filter, and a pulse parameter estimator. The pulse detection logic is operable to detect pulses and to record an arrival time of each detected pulse. The abnormal pulse filter is operable to analyze the arrival time of the detected pulses and to determine whether there are any abnormal pulses based on the analysis. In one embodiment, the abnormal pulse filter generates an adjusted time difference of arrival (TDOA) signal for a pulse, based on a determination that the pulse is abnormal. The pulse parameter estimator is operable to estimate a pulse parameter for the signal based on an analysis of the arrival times of the detected pulses and information pertaining to there being any abnormal pulses in the signal.

    • A wireless communications apparatus that it is useable as a spectrum analyzer and as a wireless receiver. The wireless communications apparatus has a radio circuit that is configured to receive EM radiation. Signal processing logic receives signals from the radio circuit based on the EM radiation. The signal processing logic has a receiver operational mode that processes the signals in accordance with a communication protocol and outputs data encoded in the signals to a host processor. The signal processing logic has a spectrum analyzer operational mode that generates frequency domain data and passes the frequency domain data to the host processor. The frequency domain data describe strength versus frequency of the EM radiation. The host processes the data in accordance with the configuration currently in use. Therefore, the wireless communications apparatus operates as a receiver in one operational mode and as a real-time spectrum analyzer in another operational mode.

    • An approach for processing data received from a communications channel that minimizes noise power and optimizes impulse response length to reduce interference, such as from inter-;symbol interference (ISI) and inter-channel interference (ICI), is disclosed. For example, finite impulse response (FIR) filtering may be used with FIR coefficients that are determined by optimizing a function of the impulse response length and the noise power. The impulse response length is optimized based on the communications channel transfer function to reduce interference. The noise power is minimized based on the noise covariance as determined using the total noise power density. The approach accounts for noise from a variety of interference sources besides ISI and ICI. The result is a superior equalizer for use in communications receivers employing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing or discrete multitone modulation in communications protocols employing Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, G.Lite and Very High Bit Rate DSL.
