    • An apparatus and a method (10) for estimating the quantity of particles collected by a suction extractor (12) includes a capturing element handling assembly (118) including a pair of stationary plates (120, 122) disposed to define a gap (127), and provided with sets of main apertures disposed to define a set of channels extending through the gap. A movable disk (134) interposed within the gap is provided with a plurality of holders (137, 138, 139) capable of receiving filter-type particle capturing elements (140). An actuator (112) provides controlled movement of the movable disk relative to the stationary plates. One of the main apertures (130, 132) defines a first inlet in fluid communication with an output fluid carrying line (184), while one aligned aperture on the second stationary plate (122) defines a first outlet with the output fluid carrying line. An optical sensing device (222) is provided for inspecting a selected element to generate signals representative of optical characteristics of the particles, and a data processor for analyzing the signals to generate an estimation of the quantity of particles captured by the element.
