    • The invention relates to a reconfigurable antenna system, which comprises a plurality of antenna units and does not employ phase shifters. Each antenna unit is by itself a reconfigurable antenna having at least an active radiating element which is coupled to one or more passive radiating elements. Each antenna unit is provided with one or more variable loads that can be electrically connected/disconnected to each other and with said antenna unit, to selectively configure the radiating properties of the system. A bias network is adopted to bias the variable loads and a control unit allows controlling the operation of said bias network. Each active radiating element is fed by at least a feeding line that provides it with a suitable polarization. Hence, the system can advantageously resort to multiple polarizations, each of them being provided by a same source. Preferably, each active radiating element receive its feeding signal from the source/s by means of power dividers and/or switches. Preferably, each antenna unit is covered by at least a radiating structure, comprising a plurality of passive radiating elements, which does not affect the reconfigurability of the antenna unit itself and increases the overall antenna gain. The antenna system is then characterized by remarkable beam-steering capabilities and high gain, avoiding the losses and complexities related to phase shifters and overcoming the typically small antenna gain values of current reconfigurable antenna systems.

    • The invention relates to a method (1) for configuring a reconfigurable antenna system (100). The method (1) comprises the following steps: a) selecting one or more groups of antenna configurations in a reference set of antenna configurations; and b) selecting one or more antenna configurations to be tested for each group of antenna configurations, which has been selected at the previous step a); and c) evaluating the radiating performance of said reconfigurable antenna system (100) for each antenna configuration, which has been selected at the previous step b), the radiating performance of said reconfigurable antenna system being evaluated on the base of estimation values that are calculated during one or more testing sessions of said reconfigurable antenna system; and d) selecting the optimal antenna configuration, for which said reconfigurable antenna system (100) has provided the best radiating performance during said testing sessions; and e) if the group of antenna configurations, to which said optimal antenna configuration belongs, comprises only said optimal antenna configuration, configuring said antenna elements (101) according to said optimal antenna configuration; or f) if the group of antenna configurations, to which said optimal antenna configuration belongs, comprises a plurality of antenna configurations, selecting said group of antenna configuration as new reference set of antenna configurations; and g) repeating the previous steps (a)-(d) for said new reference set of antenna configurations.

    • The invention relates to a reconfigurable antenna system (1), which comprises a plurality of antenna units (10) and does not employ phase shifters.     • The present invention refers to a reconfigurable antenna structure. The antenna structure comprises a radiating structure comprising one or more first radiating elements and a secondary radiating structure, operationally associated with said primary radiating structure. Said secondary radiating structure comprises a plurality of second radiating elements that can be selectively electrically connected/disconnected to each other to vary the configuration of said secondary radiating structure, so as to vary the radiating properties of the antenna structure.
