    • A method to dynamically control and define the location and the behaviour of an ARQ or HARQ retransmission buffer when the Base Station is physically split into two different entities which are physically separated. In a RAN centralized architecture having a functional split between a Centralized Unit (CU 300) for the upper layers and a Distributed Unit (DU 200} for the lower layers, connected via a fronthaul link, the location of the retransmission buffer (i.e. in the CU or the DU) is critical for the performance and efficiency, including the fronthaul latency and minimum traffic data rate. The optimal location will be impacted by different criteria (e.g. traffic, radio link quality, MAC layer inputs). A method is provided to select the optimal location of the retransmission buffer along with the modification of a RLC PDU header to indicate the selected location.
