    • An adjustable tubular string nose uses axially relatively movable wedge segments to form a variable diameter ring shape using technology described in US 7128146 in another context. The nose has a seat around a passage therethrough. After insertion of the nose into a first bore, typically a main bore, the nose is retracted out of the main bore and pressure against a seated bore in the nose expands the nose radially to a degree where re-entry into the main bore is precluded but entry into a lateral bore is still possible. The string advances onto a lateral no-go. This signals surface personnel to pick up and raise pressure to blow the seated ball through the seat to again open the passage in the nose. A seal stack behind the nose in advanced into a lateral seal bore and the treatment can then commence.

    • A fracturing tool features spaced releasable packers with an outlet in between. The housing has relatively moving components for opening the frac port between the packers with weight set on the lower packer. Once the frac port is opened the upper packer is set and the pumping begins. The upper packer can be released so that tension can be pulled on the lower packer to close the frac port and open a through passage in the housing. In one embodiment the through passage can be located above the lower packer to a sand jet perforator to clean debris away from the lower packer if it is difficult to release the lower packer or to abrasively perforate through a tubular. In another embodiment the housing outlet can be below bottom packer to perform a treatment further downhole or to operate another tool. The straddle tool can be run in on coiled tubing.

    • A dual barrier system is provided to withstand pressure differentials well above those of the check valves in a float shoe used to allow circulation of a bottom hole assembly on the way to a desired depth. The bottom hole assembly can have screens and an internal wash pipe that pushes a sleeve to hold open a lower flapper for running in. The wash pipe also holds open an upper flapper that has opposed orientation to facilitate circulation when running in. Once on location an annulus packer closes off the producing zones where the screens are located from a lower zone that can have higher pressures. A high pressure packer is set against the shoe track and the wash pipe is retracted through this packer. Retracting the wash pipe allows closure of both flappers. Flow is blocked in opposed directions by the flappers and packer in the shoe track.

    • A one trip method of cleaning a portion of the borehole and then setting a tool such as a packer or a bridge plug locates the cleanup tools above the plug with a ported sub to allow circulation of loosened debris. The debris is directed uphole from above the plug and does not have to pass around the sealing element of the plug or through bypass ports in the plug body. The plug is then positioned in the cleaned portion and set. The cleaning tools are released from the set plug and brought to the surface. These tools could be used to clean the portion of the borehole where the tool is set or clean the entire section above the tool on the trip out of the borehole. Cleaning tools can be filter, scrapers both fixed and movable, magnets, brushes and associated tools that centralize the assembly for more effective operation.

    • A well is abandoned by locating a plug in casing preferably at a location above where the quality of the cement job or the casing is questionable. A high powered laser is run in preferably on wireline and at a location above the plug is activated and rotated with the effect that the casing, cement behind the casing and the formation about the cement becomes molten and flows onto the plug where the mass cools and solidifies into a cohesive mass that spans the borehole and extends laterally into the formation. The mass is impervious and the abandonment procedure is complete. The plug can be bare or it can have layers above such as cement to protect the plug from molten temperatures until the mass cools sufficiently and solidifies.

    • A debris removal device for subterranean use features a debris laden inlet tube within a housing to define a debris collection space at the lower end of the housing. An eductor draws the debris laden fluid to the top of the inlet tube where the flow stream is returned to a downhole direction with discrete passages formed between the housing and the inlet tube by spaced parallel plates. The plates feature extending tabs on diametrically opposed lower ends of the plates. As a result flow heading back downhole can release debris and turn back uphole in passages defined between the outside of the plates and the inside wall of the housing. The tabs allow the flow turning uphole to make a greater radius turn because of a crossing over effect created by the tabs. There is less turbulence and narrower width to the flowing stream going uphole.

    • A frac plug mandrel assembly has an inner core that permits flow that is surrounded by a thin wall tube that distributes compressive loading, such as that applied by the set sealing element to the core. The core is a cylindrically shaped insert for inside the tube and allows flow until a ball or plug is landed on a seat to close off the flow through the core. The core can have a star pattern with a series of radially extending segments from a solid hub or a cylindrical shape of a honeycomb or other porous structure that has the requisite strength to resist collapse from compressive loading of the set sealing element while still allowing sufficient flow area for fluid displacement.
