    • A secure digital data transmission technique in which a transmitter (1) and a receiver (10), are connected by two or more transmission channels (8 and 9), preferably carried on separate optical fibers. The transmitter includes a switch operable to divide a datastream to be transmitted into segments each comprising from a few tens to a few thousand data bits and allocating adjacent said segments always to different said transmission channels. Delays (7) may be introduced so that the divided datastreams arrive at the receiver in correct temporal relation, or the separate received datastreams may be stored and interleaved subsequently. The switch may operate periodically or according to a key. Gaps are preferably infilled with random or unrelated data.

    • Both a system and method for optically powering a network component, such as the transponder of a picocell, is provided. The system includes a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) for processing an input signal, a remotely-located optical power source, and an optical fiber for conducting optical power from the source to the VCSEL. The VCSEL may be electrically biased from current generated by an optical-electro converter coupled to the fiber, or directly optically biased from light from the optical power source. A bias tee is connected between an input signal and an input of the VCSEL such that the VCSEL generates a modulated optical signal. The system may be the transponder of a picocell system where the VCSEL generates an optical uplink signal conducted to a head-end circuit via the same or a separate optical fiber.

    • Microlens arrays are defined with microlens elements that differ from each other in accordance with a probability distribution for shaping an optical beam having a prescribed intensity profile within a desired far-field scatter pattern. The differences include random variations in a sag profile corresponding to a surface shape of the microlenses, a boundary profile corresponding to a boundary of the microlenses, and a spatial distribution corresponding to the relative position of the microlenses within the array. The sag profile variations can be used to homogenize an intensity profile of the optical beam. The boundary profile variations within an irregular spatial distribution can be used to apply the prescribed intensity profile of the optical beam within the desired scatter pattern.
