    • The present invention relates to a combination RF tuner capable of receiving signals from the FM radio band and from the TV band. Prior art combination tuners had to compromise in quality resulting in combination tuners that neither exhibited high-end FMnor TV- signal reception behavior. A combination RF tuner capable of optimal receiving an FM-radio signal type and a TV signal type, comprising a switch-able tuned input filter (440), is proposed. One response of the input filter (440) provides a sufficient big bandwidth for enabling reception of the TV-signal type. The input filter (440) of the invention can be switched, providing a second response that has a smaller bandwidth for enabling reception of the FM-radio signal type. The second response can be realized by substantially bypassing an 10 inductive element (450) (e.g., comprising a inductor, L21, in series with a damping resistor, R3) of the input filter (440).

    • A multi stack optical data storage medium (15) for recording and reading by means of a focused radiation beam (10) is described. The beam enters the medium (15) through a first entrance face (11), and has at least a first substrate (1) with on at least one side thereof: a first layer stack (2), comprising a first information layer, a second layer stack (4), comprising a second information layer. The second layer stack is present at a position closer to the first entrance face (11) than the first layer stack (2), and is separated from the first layer stack by a first transparent spacer layer (3). The first and the second layer stack each have an effective radiation beam reflection R e if between 0.04 and 0.08 according to the Blu-ray Disc (BD) standard specification. A third layer stack (6), comprising a third information layer, is present at a position closest to the first entrance face (11), and is separated from the second layer stack (4) by a second transparent spacer layer (5). The third layer stack has a radiation beam transmission T 3 larger than 0.70, and the third information layer is a read only layer or a write once layer. A multi stack optical data storage medium is achieved which has increased data capacity and which has reflection values compatible with the dual stack BD standard specification.

    • The present invention relates to a coding strategy for joint modulation coding and ECC coding. It relates in particular to the situation where 2D coding is performed along one-dimensionally evolving strips containing a number of bit rows in the radial direction of the strip, which is orthogonal to the former direction. The idea further relates to high-rate modulation coding. According to the invention, a strip is built up by an alternation of two basic sub-units, each with their own modulation code. The first sub-unit comprises a larger number of bit rows, and its (high-rate) modulation code has a high coding efficiency realized through the use of large codewords. The second sub-unit comprises a single or only few bit rows, and its modulation code has a lower efficiency, which makes it much less sensitive to error-propagation: another function of the sub-unit of the second type is to glue sub-units of the first type together while maintaining the 2D constraint also at the boundaries of the subunits of the first type. The first sub-unit relates to most or all of the source data, and is encoded first, prior to ECC coding. The second sub-unit relates to the ECC parities, and possibly the remainder of the source data. Both at the encoder and the decoder, special measures are taken related to the precise order of both modulation code encoders (and decoders), and of the ECC encoder (and decoder).

    • An optical information storage medium (1) comprising a carrier substrate (5), a reflective information layer (10) being positioned on the carrier substrate (5) and comprising at least a first layer (11) of a first inorganic material in a first structural phase, and at least a second layer (12) of at least a second inorganic material in at least a second structural phase is disclosed. Alloy inclusions (6) are formed in the information layer (10) upon exposure to a first electromagnetic radiation and have a microstructure comprising a mixture of the first material in the first structural phase and the at least second material in the at least second structural phase. The optical properties of the alloy inclusions are different from the optical properties of the as-deposited information layer so that a modulation in electromagnetic radiation reflected from the alloy inclusions and from an area comprising the as-deposited information layer, respectively, is provided in response to a second electromagnetic radiation being emitted towards the optical information storage medium (1) to provide a read-out signal. A method of manufacturing and reading such a medium are also provided. High density recording/reading at various radiation wavelengths, including UV, and compatibility with standard CD and DVD media is achieved.

    • For irradiating a layer a radiation beam is directed and focussed to a spot on the layer, relative movement of the layer relative to the optical element is caused so that, successively, different portions of the layer are irradiated and an interspace between a surface of the optical element nearest to the layer is maintained. Furthermore, at least a portion of the interspace through which the radiation irradiates the spot on the layer is maintained filled with a liquid, the liquid being supplied via a supply conduit and flowing out of an outflow opening through a total projected cross-sectional passage area in a plane parallel to the layer. The outflow opening or a plurality of the outflow openings are positioned such that, seen in a direction perpendicular to the layer, the total cross-sectional area has a centre in the portion of the interspace through which the radiation irradiates the spot.
