    • A method and apparatus for world-mode devices capable of managing technology selection for multimode roaming between existing access technologies, as well as possible future access technologies, in a manner that eliminates wasteful scanning for non-existent systems and reduces roaming charges is disclosed. The method allows the device an opportunity to reacquire its home system before scanning for available roaming network resources in a prioritized manner that mitigates roaming costs, while conserving power and acquisition delays by eliminating scanning for non-existent system types. A minimum OOS duration is imposed on a home system before acquisition of a roaming partner to provide more time to re-acquire the home system. Preferred partner scanning and acquisition reduces roaming charges, while scanning for non existent systems is eliminated altogether.

    • A method and apparatus for performing spectral allocation for a wireless link in a wireless communication system is disclosed. The method determines a distance/range for the wireless link and assigns an optimal sub-carrier frequency to the wireless link based on (1) a higher frequency to lower frequency priority and (2) on the value of the distance/range of the wireless link and (3) on the presence or absence of a primary user in a spectrum of the wireless link. Higher frequency sub-carriers are assigned to wireless links that have a shorter distance/range and lower frequency sub-carriers are assigned to wireless links that have a longer distance/range. The method of the present work increases the spectral efficiency of the wireless communication system and improves system bandwidth.

    • Mechanisms for optimizing the selection of a new legal channel during regulatory domain changes and improving the user experience during changes in the underlying physical link having wide applicability to many wireless communications links are disclosed. Applications comprise cellular networks, WLANs, WPANs. Wireless USB, high speed channels for Bluetooth and other uses of WiMedia as well as a wide range of radio technologies that use a number of time and/or frequency-domain separation techniques to create multiple channels in a given portion of the RF spectrum where there is no global agreement on the use of the RF spectrum. Differences could pertain to permitted frequency ranges, permitted power levels, requirements to detect and/or avoid other radio technologies, indoor/outdoor use requirements, and many others. The disclosed embodiments provide a method for taking advantage of, or at least minimizing the impact of, a change in the channel link which impacts the channel characteristics such as the available bandwidth.
