    • Methods and apparatus for determining a transmit antenna gain and a spatial mode of a wireless device (100) are disclosed. The apparatus (100) includes a main receive antenna (112) associated with a first receive signal strength, a diversity receive antenna (114) associated with a second receive signal strength, and a transmit antenna (116). Each of the antennas (112, 114, and 116) is operatively coupled to a controller (102). The controller (102) determines (i) a difference between the first receive signal strength and the second receive signal strength, (ii) a correction factor based on the difference, and (iii) the transmit antenna gain based on the correction factor. In addition, the difference between the first receive signal strength and the second receive signal strength may be used, along with other sensor data (e.g., accelerometer), to estimate the spatial mode (e.g., orientation and hand grip) of the device (100). This spatial mode estimation may be then be used, among other things, to more accurately determine transmit antenna gain.

    • A method and system controls a transition between utilizing an envelope tracking (ET) mechanism and using an average power tracking (APT) mechanism to provide power to a power amplifier. A power amplifier controller (PAC) initiates an ET mechanism to track changes in amplitudes of a radio frequency (RF) signal being received by the power amplifier. If the PAC determines that the RF signal bandwidth is low and the average amplitude is at least equal to a threshold value, the PAC maintains the ET mechanism. If the RF signal bandwidth is high and/or the average amplitude of the RF signal is less than the threshold value, the PAC temporarily deactivates the ET mechanism and controls a transition to utilizing the APT mechanism by properly synchronizing the transition to the change in average signal amplitude levels so there are no undesired transients affecting signal quality or spectrum.

    • A wireless mobile device/station (MS) sends measurement reports of neighbor cells to a serving base transmitter station (BTS). The MS receives information messages transmitted by the BTS at a signaling period, while the MS is in a first cell. The MS is configured to receive a first information message and a subsequent second information message following a handoff. When both information messages are received, the MS transmits a measurement report to the base station, based on contents of the current, received information messages. Responsive to the MS failing to receive/detect the second information message, the MS transmits a measurement report to the BTS based on (a) a current/first information message(s) and (b) a previous information message of the same type as the undetected second information message. The BTS initiates another handoff based on the information in the second type of measurement report.

    • A cellular communication system comprises a base station (101) which can operate in a restricted mode wherein support is restricted to user equipments (105, 107) of a first associated set of user equipments, such as a Closed Subscriber Group. The base station comprises a profile unit (207) which determines a first transmit power profile where the first transmit power profile is indicative of the base station operating in the restricted mode. The base station further comprises a transmitter (201) for transmitting at least one common channel, such as a pilot signal or a broadcast signal, with a transmit power according to the first transmit power profile. User Equipments may measure the power profile to evaluate whether the base station employs restricted access. The number of access attempts to restricted base stations by non- eligible User Equipments may be reduced.
