    • The electromechanical device of the present invention is a low profile reed switch package (200) for surface mounting on a printed circuit board. The reed device package (200) includes a reed switch (111) with two signal terminals (106a, 106b) emanating from opposing sides thereof. A leadframe (212) is employed with signal conductors (204c, 204g) and ground conductors (204b, 204d, 204f, 204h). The signal conductors (204c, 204g) are respectively attached to each of the signal terminals (106a, 106b). A ground shield (110) surrounds the body of the reed switch (111). The ground conductors (204b, 204d, 204f, 204h) are connected to the ground shield (110) on a first side of the reed switch (111) with the signal conductor (204c, 204g) on one side of the reed switch (111) being positioned between the two ground conductors. Another pair of ground conductors are connected to the ground shield (110) on the other side of the switch and are similarly positioned with the other signal conductor positioned therebetween. The reed switch device (103) is overmolded with encapsulation material (217) with the exception of the free ends of the signal and ground conductors (204a-h) which receive solder balls (206) thereon for surface mount installation to a circuit board. After encapsulation, excess portions of the leadframe (212) are trimmed away.

    • An apparatus (10) and circuit (52) for monitoring the closed position of a fuel cap (16) relative to a tank connection pipe (12). The fuel cap (16) has a ratchet torque limiter (36) for controlling the tightening of the fuel cap (16) to the tank connection pipe (12). A magnet (32) is connnected to the fuel cap (16) and a magnetic switch (42), such as a reed switch, is connected to the tank connection pipe (12) or proximal thereto. The movement of the magnet (32) relative to the magnetic switch (42), indicating a locked fuel cap condition, is sensed by an abrupt change in magnetic field strength of the magnet (32). When releasing members (40) snap over the cams (38) therein, a current pulse is induced in a pickup coil (50). This current pulse is sensed and a logic level high voltage is produced corresponding to a tightened fuel cap condition. A dashboard lamp is then extinguished indicated that the fuel cap (16) is safely and securely tightened.

    • A wheel bearing speed sensor (100) includes an annular rotor (20) mounted to a vehicle axle spindle, having a plurality of teeth (26) extending radially outwardly, which is received within a stationary stator assembly (35). The stator assembly (35) includes an annular stator (40) having a corresponding plurality of teeth (42) extending from one end and positioned proximate to the rotor teeth (26). A bobbin member (60) is slidably received within the stator (40) just above the radially aligned rotor and stator teeth (26, 42) and is restricted from movement toward the teeth. A flexible magnetic strip (80) is magnetically adhered to the inner surface of the stator (40) adjacent the bobbin member (60), wherein the magnetic strip (80) restricts movement of the bobbin member (60) axially away from the radially aligned teeth (26, 42). A variable reluctance magnetic flux path is established simultaneously between all of the rotor and stator teeth (26, 42) as the spindle rotates, thereby inducing a corresponding variable voltage in the bobbin windings (62).
