    • A forming die includes a base and at least two die segments. At least a first one of the die segments is moveably mounted to the base for shifting between closed and opened positions. The die segments together define a cavity having an opening when the first die segment is in the closed position. A punch is moveably mounted to the base for shifting between a retracted position and an extended position wherein the punch crimps a part positioned within the cavity. A powered actuator is connected to at least the first one of the die segments, and shifts the first die segment between the closed and opened positions such that a part positioned within the cavity can be removed after crimping by shifting of the first die segment to the open position. The forming die is particularly well-suited for crimping electrochemical cells.

    • An assembly (10, 50) for retaining a work piece and fitting together for placement in a swage machine. The assembly (10, 50), includes a die (16, 54) and a collar (18, 56) to keep the work piece from moving during the swaging process. The collar (18, 56) includes two clamping sections (28, 30 and 70, 72) that are connected together, such as by a hinge (32, 74). The collar (18, 56) is placed about the work piece and then clamped in place by a retaining bolt (34, 76) at the opposing end of the clamping section (28, 30 and 709, 72). The die (16, 54) includes a recess (22, 60) for holding the collar and a recess (24, 62) for the tube. The assembly (10, 50) includes an anti-rotation feature to minimize rotation feature to minimize rotation of the collar (18, 56) within the recess (22, 60). One example of an anti-rotation feature is the formation of the recess (22, 60) and the collar (18, 56) in corresponding hexagonal shapes. The die (16, 54) may also include a recess (20, 58) for retaining a fitting to be swaged to the work piece. The die and collar assembly (10, 50) eliminates the need for nylon inserts and eliminates work piece rotation and axial movement during the automated swaging process.

    • A stent crimping tool (22) for firmly and uniformly crimping a stent (10) onto a balloon catheter (11) is constructed from a crimping section (24) holding the stent (10) and the balloon catheter (11) therein, wherein the crimping is actuated by a shaft (28) having an input end (40) and an output end (44), engaging the crimping section at the output end (44). The shaft (28) has a detent (34) formed into the input end (40). A gripping member (36) has an internal cavity (42) to receive the input end (40) and includes a hole proximated to the shaft (28), wherein a ball bearing (32) and a compression spring (30) are located within the hole (38) to bias the ball bearing (32) toward the shaft (28) and to engage the detent (34). When a torque is applied to the gripping member (36), it is transmitted through the ball bearing (32) to the shaft (28); if the torque exceeds a predetermined magnitude, it overcomes the force of the spring (30) on the ball bearing (32) causing the bearing to slide out of the detent (34) thereby disconnecting the applied torque from the shaft. The crimping section can be a rubber tube having a lumen holding the stent and catheter. When the shaft (28) compresses the rubber tube as it advances, the lumen collapses and crimps the stent onto the catheter. In another embodiment, the crimping section is a coiled filament suspended at both ends and having an axial space holding the stent and catheter. Rotating the shaft twists the filament which in turn constricts and crimps the stent onto the catheter.

    • Systems and methods for mounting a stent onto the balloon of a balloon catheter. In one embodiment, a kit is provided that includes two instruments, a first being a loader tool and a second being a profiler tool. The loader tool can be a handheld device that includes a handle at one end of the tool. A tube extends outwardly from the handle, and a wire extends axially through the tube and projects outwardly from the tube. A balloon catheter can slide along the central wire until the balloon is delivered into the interior of the tube. A stent that is disposed about the periphery of the tube can be mounted onto the balloon by grasping the handle of the loader tool and pulling the handle and tube away from the catheter and stent while the catheter and stent are maintained in a fixed relationship. To facilitate this mounting process, a profiler tube is included that allows a physician to provide the balloon with the proper profile to allow for, or to facilitate, the delivery of the balloon into the interior of the tube of the loader tool.
