    • A receiver is capable of demodulating both high data rate and low data rate transmissions. An antenna (936) receives the high and low data rate transmissions, as a received signal. An interference canceling device (38, 40) cancels a contribution of at least one shared/common channel from the received signal, producing a first interference canceled signal. A first data detector for detecting data of one of the high or low data rate transmissions by processing the first interference canceled signal. An interference canceling device for canceling the detected data of the one transmissions from the first interference canceled signal, producing a second interference canceled signal. A second data detector for detecting data of an other of the high or low data rate transmissions from the second interference canceled signal.

    • In accordance with the invention, signal information representative of a first set of information to be transmitted more than one time over at least one link is stored as a priori known signal information. This could be previously received and/or, detected information, own transmitted information or otherwise available relevant signal information in the node. Signal information representative of a second set of information is received, wherein a transmission of the first set of information interferes with the reception of the second set of information. In spite of the interference, at least part of the second set of information can still be successfully be detected by exploiting the received signal information and at least part of the previously stored a priori known signal information. The information is detected by interference cancellation based on the received signal information and relevant parts of the a priori known information. The set of priori known signal information is preferably updated by continuously storing newly detected information.

    • Interference cancellation in a mobile terminal (4) in telecommunication systems like Direct Sequence - Code Division Multiple Access systems or DS-CDMA systems can be improved by providing the mobile terminal (4) with a multi-user detector (41,42,43). These multi-user detectors require the spreading codes of other mobile terminals (2,3,5,6,7,8,9), which spreading codes are available in base stations (1) and thus need to be sent to said mobile terminal (4). By further transmitting power information of other mobile terminals (2,3,5,6,7,8,9) to the mobile terminal (4), a selector (52) can make an intelligent selection in said mobile terminal (4) and select the most important spreading codes thereby reducing the computational complexity. By locating a selector (22) in a base station (1), an intelligent selection can also be made in said base station. Preferably a selection is made per antenna sector and/or in dependence of antenna sectors, in which case direction information of other mobile terminals (2,3,5,6,7,8,9) need to be used.
