    • A water storage cell (2) is positioned underneath a pavement (4). An upper boundary of the cell (2) is forrned by a surface (6) or wearing course of the pavement (4). The remaining boundary of the cell is defined by a water-retaining layer (8) that may pen-nit infiltration of water into the surrounding ground. Means for enhancing the evaporation rate of the water in the cell are provided. As shown a ventilated pathway (20) extends between a vent (22) and a flue (24) and is surrounded by means such as a liner, suspended dished panels, absorbent mats (32) or particulate material with surface absorbency characteristics to detain water in contact with the airflow in the pathway (20). The cell (2) can be used in a SUDS system without an outfall with both permeable and impermeable pavements.

    • In order to prevent uncontrolled discharge of metallic degradation products, especially lead, into the environment in the use of a bullet backstop (1) for a shooting range, metal-ion-enriched rainwater, which has collected in an overlying projectile-stopping layer (4) in direct contact with the atmosphere, is conducted, at least in one part of the bullet backstop, via an underlying water-permeable layer (3) of gravel or crushed stone material mixed with pH-increasing material, for example crushed limestone and a watertight bottom layer (2) to a drainage pipe (5) belonging to a collecting device. The leachate is fed to a container (10), where a check of pH/value and/or metal ion content is performed. From the container (10), leachate can be discharged, via an outflow pipe, to an infiltration bed or an open trench. Protection is also sought for a bullet backstop (1) in which the specified method is applied.

    • A pollutant containment system for containing the spillage of fuels or other hydrocarbons or the like comprises a first layer (14,60), a containment vessel (16) for receiving liquid passing through the layer (14) and channelling means (22) for directing liquid permeating through the layer towards the containment vessel (16). The layer (14) provides a plurality of active surfaces for the retention of pollutant and is such as to cause water to permeate through the layer at a flow rate to avoid emulsification of oil and water. Water is introduced into and removed from the containment vessel to raise and lower the water surface thereby to cause the pollutant to be smeared over the active surfaces.

    • The present invention includes a pipe assembly (20) for collecting water runoff. The pipe assembly includes a plurality of elongated primary pipes (22) disposed in adjacent contact along their lengths. Each pair of adjacent elongated primary pipes define upper and lower elongated voids between adjacent pipe haunches (826, 28, 34, 36) and upper and lower imaginary planes (30, 38) tangential thereto. An elongated secondary pipe (40) is disposed in each void (24, 32) in tangential contact along its length with the two adjacent elongated primary pipes (20) defining the void (24, 32). A material (42) transversely encompasses the plurality of elongated primary pipes (22) and elongated secondary pipes (40). The pipe assembly (20) may be used in a water storage system and methods for installing such a system. The pipe assembly may also be used in a method for collecting surface water. The pipe assembly may be used in a system for use in a water flow path.

    • The invention relates to a sewage filter for treating especially the wastewaters of rural houses. Sewage to be treated arrives in the container of the filter via an inlet, flows in the container through a filter unit, and leaves the container via an outlet, entering in a soakage tube. In the container, solid impurities in the sewage are caught by the filter element in the filter unit. In the filter according to the invention, the filter unit can be lifted out of the container so that the filter element can be easily replaced after it has lost its filtering capacity. The material of the filter element is advantageously mineral wool.
