    • Proper disposal and reuse of wastewater particularly from the municipal origin can potentially avoid large-scale deterioration of surface water bodies in any country. The high population of rapidly developing urban system in developing countries generate large volumes of wastewater, which are discharged in the nearest water body. The inadequate treatment by conventional means is mainly due insufficient funds for its operation and maintenance, lack of skill manpower and unavailability of power for running the plants. These factors lead to high levels of pollution of surface water used for drinking and fisheries, resulting in high incidence of water borne diseases. In view of such difficulties and problems associated with the conventional treatment system in developing countries, the present invention, PhytoRid, will be appropriate and novel in solving the problems of wastewater treatment and reuse for multiple purposes. The basic objective of the invention is to use no electricity, minimal manpower and use natural plants in a manner that they achieve the desired treatment levels and reuse the treated water, which is a scarce resource in many places. A characteristic of the technology is that the system is based on natural wetlands principle. System is made up of media zone viz., bricks, sand and stone in which aquatic or semi-aquatic plant species are grown. Biochemical oxygen demand and total suspended solids removals averaged between 75-90% and 68-86% respectively while fecal coliform removal was about 85-97% in the treatment cells. Nitrogen reductions were in the range 50-69% and phosphorus between 45-59% were obtained. The system is potentially good, low-cost, appropriate technology treatment for wastewater in urban as well as rural areas. Advantages of present invention include simple operation and maintenance, process stability under varying environmental conditions, lower construction and operating costs.

    • Apparatus suitable for use in the treatment of waste and/or organic materials which includes a main body having a treatment chamber therein having a base which when the apparatus is in a harvestig mode is arranged with a space therebelow. The base includes a plurality of generally parallel spaced apart support elements (32), the support elements being spaced apart at a distance sufficient to support the material within the chamber during the treatment process and enable extraction of the treated material through the spaces between the support elements during a harvesting process. There is also disclosed a harvesting device comprising a plurality of extraction elements (108) which are adapted to project through the spaces between the support elements to dislodge and extract the treated material through the base. The apparatus and harvesting device is particularly useful for removing worm castings in vermiculture.
