    • Reference controls for use with pharmacogenomic testing, and methods for their identification, preparation, and use, are disclosed. The reference controls can confirm that pharmacogenomic testing correctly identifies individuals that do or do not have the mutation of interest, in both clinical trial and patient treatment settings. The reference controls can be selected to include one or more mutations to be identified, and prescreened to confirm that they bind to one or more of the primers used in the pharmacogenomic testing. The reference controls are human genomic DNA that includes certain identified polymorphisms (mutations) of interest, ideally derived from individuals, pre-selected and optionally properly consented, which have one or more of the polymorρhism(s) of interest. The reference controls can be prepared by targeted pre-screening of human patients, by examining the genotype or genetic profile of the patients, isolating cells with the desired mutation, optionally immortalizing the cells, and obtaining DNA from the cells. The prescreening of prospective donors can be targeted based on any of a number of factors, such as genes of interest, mutations within the genes of interest, and membership in a specific ethnic or disease state population. The genomic DNA can be pre-screened for its ability to be detected, using a standard pharmacogenomic test, as including a specific mutation. Examples of mutations of interest include those present in a Phase I or Phase II metabolic enzyme such as CYP2D6, CYP2C19, CYP2C9, CYP2C8, and CYP3A5, CYP3A4, CYP2A6, CYP2B6, UGTlAl, DPD, ERCCl, MDRl, ADH2, NATl and NAT2 or any other metabolic or disease gene.

    • A system integrates mailing label and/or postage purchasing systems with information that is available locally at a user's workstation or local network and also information that is available globally through a postal service server. The system obtains mailing addresses locally from the user or user's network and/or globally from a postal service server. The system may thus provide an address from the user's workstation and then a more current or appropriate mailing address, based on information available through the postal service. Further, the system maintains the postage and mailing label information supplied by the user in a session that either concludes when the user prints postage stamps and mailing labels locally or continues to allow the user to print or otherwise obtain the postage and mailing labels at a Post Office that communicates with the postal service server. The system also makes available to the user other services that the system funds through a user's postage account. The system may provide services, suchas, money transfers, crediting telephone cards, and so forth, and debit the user's postal account accordingly. The system may also send status messages to the user, an intended recipient or both evidencing the transfer or delivery of funds, mail pieces, and so forth. Further, the system may be combined with a personal mail piece tracking and tracing system, to provide the user with other services that are based, in whole or in part, on information maintained by or under the control of the postal sercice.

    • In image compression, certain less significant data may be discarded. When multiple sets of image data are involved, an issue may arise as to which sets of data contain the most significant data. The invention is directed to finding efficient computational solutions for the corresponding rate-distortion problem. In a case where there are end blocks which comprise an image, for each block a separate bit stream may be generated with a property that it can be truncated to a variety of discrete lengths. Associated with each length is a measure of distortion that the image would incur if the given block was truncated to a given length. Given a user-specified size for the image, it is desired to find a set of truncation lengths for each block such that the overall distortion to the image is minimized. Alternatively, a user may select a desired quality for the image. The solution provided by the invention is a heuristic based on priority cues to approximate the optimal truncation point so as to meet the desired criteria.
