    • The invention is directed to techniques for cleaning an optical interface pneumatically, i.e., using fluid (liquid or gas). Fluid can be delivered in an automated manner at a particular time in order alleviate the burden of a technician having to manually clean the optical interface with conventional cleaning material or a stick-on adhesive each time the technician exposes the optical interface. One arrangement is directed to an optical connection system having a first optical connector and a second optical connector. The first optical connector includes a first optical connector housing and a first optical interface fastened to the first optical connector housing. The second optical connector includes a second optical connector housing and a second optical interface fastened to the second optical connector housing. The second optical connector housing defines an aperture that directs fluid over at least one of the first and second optical interfaces.

    • A piece of soiled fabric (39) is cleaned by contacting it with a jet of an ionized soil-dislodging gas to dislodge the soil therefrom. The ionized gas and the use of an oppositely charged electrostatic filter (34) aid in preventing redeposition of the soil onto the fabric (39). The fabric (39) may be agitated while it is contacted with the gas jet. A portion of the piece of fabric (39) may be treated with an electrostatic spotting compound that enhances the effect of the ionized gas and may also enhance the removal of the soil. An apparatus (30) for accomplishing the cleaning includes a container (36) having an interior (38) in which the fabric (39) is received, a gas jet nozzle (46) directed into the interior (38) of the container (36), a source (50, 52) of a pressurized gas communicating with an inlet of the gas jet nozzle (46), a gas jet manifold (44) extending from the source (50, 52) to the gas jet nozzle (46), and a gas ionizer (80) disposed to ionize the pressurized gas passing through the gas jet nozzle (46).

    • The present invention relates to an electrostatic air blower which is preferably intended for use in cleaning optofibers without risking the contamination of said fibers with, e.g., metal particles that may have been loosened from electrodes used in a cleaning process. The ends of optofibers can be cleaned simply and reliably prior to welding said ends together, with the aid of said electrostatic air blower. The electrostatic air blower includes two ceramic plasma cannons (11, 12) which face towards one another at a given distance apart. Each plasma cannon includes a ceramic tube which houses an electrode. Repeated discharges between the electrodes in the tubes causes pressure waves to be generated in the air present between the tube orifices. An optofiber (14) or the end of an optofiber placed in the proximity of the tube orifices close to the symmetry axis of said tube will be subjected to these pressure waves and any contaminants present, such as dust or dirt particles on the surface of the optofiber, will be blown away.

    • A pressure flow system and method for its use are provided for contacting the interior of a fluid permeable, e.g., porous, workpiece. The system includes a fluid pressure chamber having an inlet port and an opening formed in one of the chamber walls. An adjustable seal capable of providing a fluid-tight seal about the exterior of a workpiece having a non-uniform surface is positioned within the opening. Fluid under pressure is supplied to the pressure chamber to force fluid to flow through the internal matrix of the workpiece. In a preferred embodiment, the workpiece is a bone or a section thereof, and the fluid is forced to flow from the endosteal portion of bone to the periosteal portion of bone through the vasculature and porous structure of the bone to remove blood, bone marrow and/or other non-bone constituent(s) from the bone. Alternatively, the fluid can be chosen to decontaminate and/or demineralize the bone, to stain the bone to improve visualization of the bone microvasculature or to impregnate with pharmacological agents (antibiotics, bone growth factors, etc.) so that bone can act as a delivery system.
