    • A speed/torque enhancing power transmission is disclosed that translates slow rotating, high torque motion to high rotation, low torque motion or alternatively high rotating low torque motion to low rotating high torque motion and is suitable as a speed increaser for use in a device like a wind turbine. As a speed increaser the transmission has certain advantages, such as reduced weight and/or size compared to other units having the same performance characteristics. The speed increaser employs an externally toothed spur gear orbiting in a non-rotating manner inside an internally toothed ring gear. The input drives the ring gear and the orbiting spur gear drives an eccentric on the output shaft. In one embodiment, cross guide projections on the spur gear and cross guide projections on the housing engage slots in a swash plate.

    • The risk of an extreme gust of wind hitting a wind turbine is estimated by gathering data from one or more sensors for use as training data. This data is acquired over a period of time and is converted in to a feature vector for a given time period by a statistical measure. A number of feature zones are formed, each zone relating to a different estimate of risk with each feature vector being assigned to a risk category. The risk category is defined with reference to the value of one or more chosen turbine parameters at the time the data was acquired. The feature zones are formed from from a measure of distance such as the mean and covariance of feature vectors from within a given category. Live data is processed by measuring the mahalonobis distance from the feature vector of the live data to the centre of each zone and the risk of an extreme gust is assessed as that of the feature zone to which the mahalonobis distance is lowest.

    • A wind turbine power generating system includes a wind turbine connected to a speed increasing gearbox having an output shaft. An electrical generator having an input shaft is also provided. An asymmetrical coupling interconnects the input and output shafts. The coupling includes a first torque limiting clutch in series connection with a one-way clutch between the input and output shafts. A second torque limiting clutch is provided in parallel connection with the one-way clutch between the input and output shafts. The first and second torque limiting clutches have different characteristic slip torques. The interconnection of the clutches, and the implementation of the one-way clutch, provides for effective operation of the first and second torque limiting clutches in opposite rotational directions of the input and output shafts. The second torque limiting clutch has a characteristic slip torque that is a fraction of the first torque limiting clutch, the second torque limiting clutch providing protection against reverse impulse loads.
