    • A vehicle anti-theft system in the form of a mechanically interengagable electronic key and lock includes stored key and vehicle identifiers in both the key and in the lock. A random number is generated in the lock each time the vehicle ignition switch is closed and that random number is used to encode one of the identifiers for transmission to the key. The key uses the corresponding stored identifier to recover the random number. The other stored identifier is then encoded using the recovered random number and the encoded other identifier is returned to the lock. The lock uses the generated random number to recover the second identifier for comparison to its stored value. If the comparison fails, vehicle operation is prevented. The system may effect several trials, each using a new random number before refusing further attempts. The lock electronics is preferably disposed in the vehicle fuel tank and controls operation of the vehicle fuel pump.

    • An electronic security system includes an electronic lock mechanism (104) and an electronic key (101), each of which is provided with a microprocessor controller and a memory storing data including an ID code and encryption key codes. The lock microprocessor may either change ID codes stored in it's memory or encrypt a seed number to be used for determining access to the lock. The key can only be used to access the lock either once or for a limited number of successible times, and must thereafter be reprogrammed by a host computer (301) to be loaded with either the proper ID code or the appropriate encryption key code for that lock. The electronic lock operates a solenoid (1624) which retracts a bolt-blocking mechanism that prevents the unlocking of the bolt even when a key having the correct mechanical key cuts is inserted into the lock. Power for operating the electronic lock as well as the solenoid is provided by a power supply within the key. In a preferred embodiment the key unit is composed of a handheld computer witha separate internal circuit board which stores key code information and performs encryption/decryption functions. A novel electronic T-lock (1340) assembly is also provided for use with vending machines and the like.

    • A method for transporting valuable documents from a first location to a second location in a break-in protected case provided with means which, on triggering, acts on the valuables in the case, for instance by dye-disfiguration, triggering being controlled by a timing mechanism in the case. The process comprises that the despatcher at the first location, after putting the valuables in the case, locks it and activates the timing mechanism to induce triggering after a given transport time in the lack of any deactivation, that the case is transported from the first location to the second location, and that the recipient at the second location deactivates the timing mechanism in the case and afterwards opens it. The distinguishing features of the method are that an ID sigil is calculated at the first location, based upon a secret recipient key, an algorithm and open data which includes non-fixed data, such as time data, that the calculated sigil is electronically stored in the case in connection with the locking thereof, preferably together with the non-fixed data necessary for sigil calculation, that, in connection with receipt of the case at the second location, and ID sigil is calculated based upon a recipient sigil provided by the recipient, the algorithm and open data, including said non-fixed data, and that a comparison is conducted in the case between the stored sigil and the sigil thus calculated at the second location, correspondence between the sigils permitting deactivation of the time mechanism and allowing opening of the case without any abovementioned acts upon the valuables.

    • An electronic security system (10) includes an electronic lock device (12) and an associated electronic key (14). The electronic lock device includes a number of operational features, such as counters to monitor usage. The electronic key (14) also includes a number of operational features, such as packet-formatted audio download of key data using a piezoelectric transducer (150); codes that can be updated early without invalidating existing codes; and a tracking memory (148) that identifies the lock devices with which the key has communicated. When this tracking memory becomes full, operation of the key may be impaired. The impaired key can then only be re-enabled by downloading the tracking data from the key memory. The lock and key units cooperate to provide still additional operational features, such as a selectively-enabled, vandalism-resistant lockout list; a secure challenge-response security mechanism; and bilateral data/power exchange between the two units using just a single pair of conductors.
