摘要： This disclosure provides compositions suitable as drilling fluids, completion fluids, work- over fluids, or stimulation/fracking fluids, which exhibit shale inhibiting, thermostabilizing, viscosifying, and fluid loss reducing effects when used for these purposes. In some embodiments, this disclosure provides compositions that include a cellulose product comprising the contact product of: at least one cellulosic ether; at least one salt of a polyvalent metal ion; and at least one ligand or a salt of the ligand. The resulting cellulose products are useful in drilling of oil, gas, and other wells.

摘要： This invention relates to water-soluble hydroxyethylcelluloses (HECs) and derivatives thereof having a hydroxyethyl molar substitution (HE- MS) from about 0.7 to 1.3. These HECs are more efficient in thickening aqueous systems than prior art HEC products and show unique rheology in low water activity systems. These HECs can be distinguished from prior art and commercial HEC products by having an unsubstituted anhydroglucose trimer ratio (U3R) less than 0.21 and a water solubility greater than 90 wt %. This invention also relates to a unique continuous caustic reduction hydroxyethylation process for making the water-soluble, lowly substituted HECs and uses thereof in functional systems.

摘要： A water-base drilling fluid for use in drilling wells through a formation containing a shale which swells in the presence of water. The drilling fluid preferably includes: an aqueous based continuous phase, a weight material, and a shale hydration inhibition agent having the formula: H2N - R - {OR'}x - Y, in which R and R' are alkylene groups having 1 to to 6 carbon atoms and x is a value from about 1 to about 25. The Y group should be an amine or alkoxy group, preferably a primary amine or a methoxy group. The shale hydration inhibition agent should be present in sufficient concentration to reduce the swelling of the shale. Also inclusive of the present invention is a method of reducing the swelling of shale clay encountered during the drilling of a subterranean well, the method comprising circulating in the well a water-base fluid formulated in accordance with the present invention.
