    • A minimally invasive fixation system and method for providing access to a surgical site. The fixation system may include a holding assembly, the holding assembling preferably including a lateral implant holder which may be attached to a pedicle screw and a sleeve positioned in connection with the lateral implant holder to prevent the lateral implant holder from separating from the pedicle screw. The sleeve may further include a tissue protection portion to keep the tissue out of the surgical site. A holding sleeve may be operably connected to the holding assembly and pedicle screw and may be used to insert the pedicle screw into the body. Multiple constructs may be inserted into the body so that a portion of the holding assembly extends from the body and provides access to and visualization of the surgical site. A rod holder may also be used to insert a rod into the head of the screw. The rod may be held by the rod holder so that the rod may be angulated as the rod is inserted into the screw heads. Once the rod is positioned in the screw heads, locking caps and/or set screws may be positioned over the rod and engage the screw heads so that the position of the rod may be fixed with respect to the screws. In some embodiments, a movement mechanism may be used to move the screws relative to each other to compress and/or distract the vertebrae.

    • A compressor tool for use in minimally invasive surgery is provided having first and second elongate elements where each elongate element is connected to the other at a pivot point (16) within a pivot region (18) of each element for rotating articulation in an articulation plane with respect to each other. The first and second elongate elements are configured to provide a tool pivot region including the pivot point, a tool handle (20) proximal to the tool pivot region, and a tool working portion distal to the too pivot region so that pressure applied to the tool handle portion (22) results in a compressive force being applied by the tool working portion. The tool has a first closed position for insertion of the tool through an incision or portal so that the pivot region is located within the incision or portal, and a second working position where the tool working portion is arranged to provide a compressive force to spaced apart elements within a patient's body. Articulation of the tool between the first closed position and the second working position results in no increase in dimension of the tool in the pivot region.

    • A device for pulling a vertebral anchor with a strain gauge in combination with a tension rod. The device has a cylindrical telescopic housing made of a first hollow cylinder received inside a second hollow cylinder such that the two hollow cylinders define a longitudinal passage from the proximal to the distal end of the cylindrical telescopic housing. The tension rod is slidably disposed within the longitudinal passageway and has a means mounted on or near its distal end to attach to vertebral anchor (or bone screw). The first and second hollow cylinders are biased apart by a mechanical spring, which resides inside the second hollow cylinder. A means for moving said tension rod in a proximal direction with respect to said telescopic housing is then operatively attached to the housing, as well as, a strain gauge to directly measure the amount of tension placed on the tension rod when the device is in use.
