    • A filter apparatus and method utilize a filter element, defining a longitudinal axis and an axial end thereof, and having a central winding structure and a length of fluted filter material wound about the winding structure with the flutes of the media oriented to provide for filtration of fluid passing axially through the filter element. An edge of filter media defines the axial end of the filter element when the media is wound about the winding structure. An axial end of the winding structure is disposed adjacent the axial end of the filter element. A winding feature extends substantially axially outward from the axial end of the winding structure to a distal end of the winding feature. The filter media is wrapped about the winding structure such that the axial end of the filter element is disposed substantially flush with the distal end of the winding feature.

    • An air filter element (10) having an inner metal liner (12), an outer metal liner (14), a filter media (16), an annular end cap (18), and a composite end cap (20) is provided. The annular end cap is formed over the metal liners such that the metal liners are secured and at least a portion of the filter media is sealed. The composite end cap has an annular plastic insert (26) and a foamed urethane portion (28). The annular plastic insert is tapered upwardly from an outer insert periphery toward a central aperture. The foamed urethane portion is molded about the annular plastic insert such that the metal liners are secured, at least a portion of the filter media is sealed, and an annular groove (34) is formed on an underside of the composite end cap. The annular groove has a plurality of transverse ribs therein. Urethane flashing occurs proximate the central aperture and/ or the outer liner periphery.

    • A fluid filter includes a base plate, a canister, and filtering media contained in the canister for filtering fluid from an inlet port to an outlet port. Notches are formed into an outer periphery of the base plate. An annular bead of the canister side wall is partially formed into the notches to provide a torque locking mechanism between the base plate and the canister. The terminating lip portion of the canister is wrapped around the outer face of the base plate and formed into an annular trough to directly secure the base plate to the canister. The annular trough includes a diverging outer wall that provides a narrow contact interface between the terminating lip portion and the retention corner of the base plate to thereby reduce moment loads induced therebetween as a result of high fluid pressures in the filter.

    • A fluted filter media includes a wall of porous filter material separating a first flute from one or more adjacent flutes, and an intermediate flow restriction disposed in the first flute between upstream and downstream ends of the filter media, so that fluid entering the first flute upstream of the intermediate flow restriction is urged to flow through the wall upstream of the intermediate flow restriction into one or more of the one or more adjacent flutes while flowing through the filter media.
