    • A steering knuckle (K) is supported on a road wheel (w) of an automotive vehicle by a hub assembly (A, C) which includes a housing (4) fitted into a bore (8) in the knuckle and a hub (2) having a flange (16) to which the road wheel is attached and also a spindle (18) which projects from the flange into the housing. The hub assembly also includes an antifriction bearing (6) located between the spindle and the housing. The bearing has cones (30) which fit over the spindle between a shoulder (20) on the hub flange and an integrally formed abutment (26) on the other end of the spindle. The ends of the bearing contain seals (58) which exclude contaminants from the interior of the hearing. A slinger (12, 72) fits around the spindle where it is captured between the cone at the inboard end of the bearing and the abutment. The slinger extends outwardly past seal at the inboard end of the bearing and has a circular peripheral edge (68, 80) which lies close to the surface of the bore in the steering knuckle, thus providing an additional barrier to exclude contaminants from the bearing.

    • A low friction shielded bearing assembly (10) for supporting a machine shaft (24), for example a spindle shaft of a food cutting machine, includes a rolling elements radial and thrust bearing subassembly (32) containing ball or roller elements (34) supported between inner and outer relatively rotatable bearing races (42, 44) with seal elements (38, 40) for retaining lubricant within the bearing subassembly (32). A flanged, fretting and corrosion resistant sleeve (54) is fixed within the inner race (42) of the bearing subassembly (32) with the flange (62) of the sleeve shielding an adjacent bearing seal (40) against direct impingement by sprayed cleaning fluids. The sleeve also transmits radial and thrust loads to the inner race. The bearing location subassembly (32) is retained within an annular retainer (46) that is adjustably attached to a machine frame (12) to permit adjustment of the location of the rotational axis (52) of a shaft (24) supported by the bearing and to permit adjustment of the bearing location axially along the shaft and relative to the machine frame (12). A secondary journal bearing (64) may be provided as a backup to the ball or roller bearing subassembly in the event of a failure of the rolling element bearing and also to enable alignment of a shaft during assembly and disassembly of the shaft relative to the bearing assembly. The journal bearing normally does not contact the shaft during normal operation of the bearing assembly.
