    • Systems and methods are described for reverse digitized communications. A method includes: providing at least one optical fiber from at least one member selected from the group consisting of a headend and a hub, a minifibernode coupled to said at least one optical fiber, and an electrical conductor coupled to said minifibernode; transforming a forward optical signal from said at least one optical fiber to a forward analog electrical signal on said electrical conductor at said minifibernode; and transforming a reverse analog electrical signal on said electrical conductor to a reverse digital optical signal at said minifibernode. The systems and methods provide advantages because the need for muxnode units is eliminated, the cost of the node units is reduced, the amount of optical fiber is reduced and the reverse bandwidth is increased.

    • A node (200) for receiving analog signals transmitted within a broadband communication system (100) includes a summer (205) for summing the analog signals to generate a summed analog signal and an analog-to-digital (A/D) converter (210) coupled to the summer (205) for converting the summed analog signal into a digital electrical signal. The node (200) also includes a signal processor (DSP)(220) coupled to the A/D converter (210) for filtering the digital electrical signal in accordance with a filter algorithm to generate a filtered digital signal. The DSP (220) including a control port for receiving a control signal (215) indicative of the filter algorithm that is to be used. The filtered signal is then transmitted upstream within the system (100) by a transmitter (240) coupled to the DSP (220).

    • A fiber optic communication system for transmitting signals from a plurality of spatially distributed subscriber transmitters to a central office. Each of the transmitters have a digital data source, a phase modulator, a coherent optical transmitter operating in continuous-wave mode and a biasing circuit to bias the coherent optical transmitter into its linear operating region, such that the coherent optical transmitter transmits light at a first wavelength, intensity modulated by the phase modulated data output within the linear operating region. Each transmitter may also be used to time division multiplex the actual data onto the fiber optic cable. Furthermore, the transmitters may also be grouped into a frequency division multiplexing scheme without the need for expansive, specifically-designed filters. The central office includes at least an optical receiver and phase demodulator. In a frequency division multiplexed scheme, the central office may also include the basic filter.
