    • A communication system comprises at least one controller station and at least one controlled station; the stations being interconnected via a communication network. Functionality of each controlled station is associated with a respective abstract representation, referred to as AR, enabling applications(s) to control the functionality of the controlled station by means of messages transmitted via the communication network and acting on the AR. The controller station comprises control means for executing at least one AR associated with a respective controlled station. The communication system comprises means for storing for at least one of the controlled stations at least one associated preference indicator; the preference indicator enabling to determine by which one(s) of the control means the AR of the associated controlled station should preferably be executed. The communication system comprises AR distribution means for obtaining the preference indicator associated with a respective controlled station and, in dependence on the obtained preference indicator, determining which controller station should execute the AR of the respective controlled station and assigning the AR to the controller station. The controller station comprises AR allocation means for allocating an assigned AR to the control means of the controller station.

    • Method and system for performing a service on a home network having a plurality of home devices connected thereto, by: connecting a client device to the home network for displaying a user interface; executing a software agent on the client device for obtaining selection information for the network devices and displaying the selection information on a user interface displayed on the client device; selecting a first home device connected to the network from the user interface being displayed on the client device; reading first capabilities data for the first home device, where the first capabilities data includes information in a structured format for identifying the capabilities of the first home device; reading second capabilities data for a second home device connected to the network, where the second capabilities data includes information in the structured format for identifying the capabilities of the second home device; comparing the first and second capabilities data of the first and second home devices, respectively; selecting the second home device from the user interface displayed on the client device; and sending control and command data from the client device to the first and second home devices to cause the first and second home devices to communicate with each other to perform the service.

    • The invention concerns a method for distributive management of a catalogue of objects in a communication network comprising machines, said method comprising a step for recording the local objects present in a machine in a local register managed at said machine level. The method is characterised in that it consists in: preparing, by a local object, a request for a list of objects, said request being transmitted to the single local register of the machine housing the object; propagating said request by the local register to remote registers; collecting replies to said request by remote registers and the local register reply; transmitting the collected replies to the local object which has made the initial request. The invention also concerns machines capable of being connected to a network wherein said method is implemented. The invention is particularly applicable in the context of home automation communication networks.

    • A communication system (100) includes a plurality of controller stations (114 and 116), and at least one controlled station (104 to 112). The stations are interconnected via a communication network (120). The functionality of each controlled station is associated with a respective abstract representation, referred to as AR. The AR provides an interface for software elements in the system to control functionality of the controlled station by means of messages exchanged with the AR via the communication network. The AR may be implemented using platform-independent code, such as Java. Each controller station includes control means for executing at least one AR of a controlled station and assigned to the local controller station. The system includes leader selection means for selecting a single one of the controller stations as a leading controller station. AR distribution means of the leading controller station determines which controller station should preferably execute the AR(s) of the respective controlled station(s) and assigns each AR to at most one of the controller stations.
