    • According to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention, an apparatus for selectively introducing birefringence in an optical fiber includes an actuator (107) which selectively exerts a force on the fiber (108), and a registration key which selectively orients an axis of the optical fiber at predetermined azimuths. According to another illustrative embodiment of the present invention, an apparatus for changing the polarization state of an optical signal includes a plurality of sequentially connected phase shifters (101, 102, 103, 104), wherein each of the phase shifters (101, 102, 103, 104) is adapted to exert a force on an optical fiber disposed therein. Each of the plurality of phase shifters (101, 102, 103, 104) includes a registration key (604, 702) which selectively orients an axis of the optical fiber disposed in the registration key at a predetermined azimuth.

    • A polarization mode dispersion compensator corrects polarization mode dispersion in an optical signal having a fast polarization mode component, a slow polarization mode component and a time differential between the components. The compensator includes a phase shifter and a variable delay section. An input of the phase shifter is coupled to an optical device that provides an optical signal that exhibits polarization mode dispersion. The phase shifter functions to rotate the optical signal principal states of polarization to a desired orientation. The phase shifter engages a segment of an optical fiber that is coated with a radiation cured coatings. The coating composition is selected so that in response to a preload comprising the application of a stress of about 80 MPa to said coating at about 80 °C and after a stress-relaxation period of at least about 1 hour, at about 80 °C, a residual stress exhibited by said coating comprises at least about 60 MPa, and the coating is capable of transmitting a transverse stress to the fiber to controllably change the birefringence of the fiber.

    • The invention relates to an electronically adjustable Bragg-grating filter module (FM) which comprises a piezoelectric actuator (1) with which the length of the Bragg-grating filter (3) can be modified. The change in length of the Bragg-grating filter can be precisely measured by means of a strain gauge (4). Since the centre frequency of the Bragg-grating filter (3) depends on its length this permits an indirect adjustment of the frequency. The above filter is especially suitable for remote-controlled add-drop modules (ADM). To eliminate the influences of the piezoelectric element during adjustment of the Bragg-grating filter frequency adjustment is carried out by means of a regulator circuit.

    • An apparatus modulates the phase of an optical signal. The apparatus includes an optical medium (110) for propagating the optical signal. At least one electrode (130, 132) is positioned in proximity with the medium (110). The electrode induces an electric field within the medium in response to an AC voltage to produce variations in the index of refraction of the optical medium (110) through the electrostrictive effect. Preferably, the phase of the optical signal is modulated such that polarization components of the optical signal parallel to and orthogonal to the electric field experience an equal phase shift. In certain embodiments, a DC voltage is supplied to the optical medium. Alternatively, the DC voltage within the optical medium may arise from poling the optical medium. Certain embodiments of the present invention include two electrodes positioned on opposite sides of the optical medium. The apparatus is used in an interferometer to form modulation device or switching device.

    • In a fiber optic rotation sensor, a portion of the coiled optical fiber is a part of and affected by a bias optical phase modulator which causes a varying phase relationship between the light waves at a fundamental frequency. However, the varying phase relationship has at least one harmonic which is due to mechanical vibration of the optical fiber that is a part of the modulator. This harmonic contributes to an erroneous indication of rotation. The amplitude of such harmonic is reduced by lowering the Q of the resonating fiber. This is effected by applying a damping material to the optical fiber and a portion of the modulator. A photodetector detects the counter-propagating waves and sends a corresponding electrical signal on to a signal component selection device that provides an indication of sensed rotation, including error due to the mechanically resonating optical fiber of the modulator.
