    • Endotoxin, also known as lipopolysaccharides (LPS), is the major mediator of septic shock due to Gram-negative bacterial infection. Chemically synthesized S3 peptide, derived from Sushi3 domain of Factor C, which is the endotoxin-sensitive serine protease of the limulus coagulation cascade, binds and neutralizes LPS activity. Fluorescent tagged-S3 is shown to detect LPS-containing bacteria. For large-scale production of S3 and to mimick other pathogen-recognizing molecules, tandem multimers of the S3 gene were constructed and expressed in E. coli. Tetramer of S3 for example is shown to display an enhanced inhibitory effect on LPS-induced activities. An affinity matrix based on tetramer of S3 is also shown to be particularly efficient at removing LPS.

    • A flow of fluid is switched on and off by diverting the flow to an alternative path. In a preferred application an abrasive cutting jet, formed by a flow of abrasive slurry fed via a conduit 5 to a cutting jet nozzle 6, is switched on and off by diverting the flow at a three way changeover valve 1 to a conduit 8 and bypass nozzle 9. Valves 18, 20 control the connection to of a flow of clean auxiliary water to respective outlet ports 4, 7 of the changeover valve 1 to reduce pressure differentials during operation of the changeover valve and to provide clean backflows which hydraulically divert the flow of abrasive slurry at the changeover valve and allow the changeover valve to open and close on a clean, largely abrasive-free flow.

    • A temperature telemetric sender and a temperature telemeter (50) using one or more of the senders with a single or common receiver (64) are provided. The temperature telemetric sender includes a sensor (52) to measure a temperature of a body cavity, preferably an ear canal, of a subject. A transmitter (60) coupled to the sensor is responsive to the sensor and transmits a signal indicative of the temperature of the body cavity. The receiver (64) receives the signal wirelessly from the transmitter. The temperature values received by the receiver may be compensated for changes in ambient temperature, measured at the sender or receiver, and may be converted into an estimation of a core body temperature. The temperatures may be displayed, preferably as a series of temperatures displayed graphically. An alarm (66) may be provided when the received signal, or a temperature value derived from it, is indicative of a temperature equaling a predetermined temperature or falling outside a predetermined temperature range. Intermediate transceivers, which relay temperature signals from respective senders to the common receiver, may be used to extend the operational range.
