摘要： A cable modem system and method is provided for the transfer and processing of data in accordance with specialized data transfer protocols while utilizing conventional cable modem termination system (CMTS) equipment. A cable modem system in accordance with the invention includes a cable modem that provides for the modification of data packets in accordance with a proprietary protocol and the addressing of the modified data packets to a headend server. The headend server is adapted to reconstruct the data packets for transmission to other local cable modems or to a packet-switched network. In additional embodiments, the CMTS itself rather than a headend server operates to reconstruct the data packets.

摘要： Internet access is provided over a digital cable television system using Internet protocol (IP) over MPEG digital video. Simultaneous Internet access and TV viewing is provided by an IP over MPEG-2 video system with channel tracking. Whenever a video channel change is detected, the viewer's Internet connection is routed from one video channel to another video channel so that the Internet connection is dynamically routed and tracks the channel changes made by the viewer. Additionally, if there is no available data carrying capacity in the video channel selected by the viewer ( a "busy" condition), the Internet connection is routed to an out-of-band frequency. The Internet connection tracks the channel changes made by the viewer using a single tuner/digital MPEG decoder in the CATV settop box.

摘要： A system and method provides a way to display images of recently viewed television channels for the user's convenience. Multiple recently accessed television channels are stored in a list. Selecting channels in predefined ways causes the channels to be added to the list in an order in which they were accessed. Small screen images corresponding to a number of recently viewed television channels are displayed in a "recent channel" display screen. The small screen image for the channel being currently viewed is active and displays a live broadcast image, while the remaining small screen images display still images. A focus identifies the screen image of the currently active channel. The focus can be moved among the other small screen images within the recent channel display screen, wherein the channel corresponding to the currently focused image becoming the active channel.

The client processing system includes processing circuitry configured to receive hypertext pages from a remote server and to display the hypertext pages on a display device, such as a conventional television set. The client system further includes a television tuner for receiving either cable television or broadcast television signals. When a television signal is initially provided to the client system, the client system executes a routine to automatically characterize the received television signal as broadcast (408), HRC cable (410), IRC cable (407), or standard cable. The characterization (401, 402) is made based upon one or more frequencies at which the incoming television signal is detected.

The media encoder sends a second set of data representing a first number of estimated encoding bytes for the media data to the media encoder. In one embodiment, a network interface device comprises: a plug-in diplex module comprising an enclosure including high and low pass filters and a first set of plug connectors providing an external interface to the filters; and a network interface unit comprising a network connector to receive signals from and send signals to a CATV headend, a second set of plug connectors compatible to mate with the first set, wherein the network connector is electrically coupled to the filters via the first and second sets of plug connectors, and a cable modem port configured to output downstream RF signals to a cable modem and to receive upstream RF signals from the cable modem, wherein the cable modem port is electrically coupled to the high and low pass filters via the sets of plug connectors.
