    • A power board (1) for connecting a primary power source in the form of a mains supply to a plurality of loads. The loads include a desktop computer (2), a monitor (3) for computer (2), a printer (4), and a table lamp (5). Board (1) includes a moulded plastics prismatic housing (6). An input connector, in the form of a three pin domestic plug (7) and mounted to housing (6) via a flexible insulated lead (11). A plurality of output connectors, in the form of three pin domestic power sockets (12, 13 and 14), are mounted to the housing for electrically connecting devices (3, 4, 5) respectively. A switch, in the form of a relay (15), is located within housing (6). This relay is electrically disposed between plug (7) and sockets (12, 13 and 14) and includes contacts (16) for changing between an open and closed state to respectively switch source and devices (3, 4, 5). A controller, in the form of an energising coil (17) of relay (15), is mounted, indirectly, to housing (6) for receiving a power signal from computer (2) and, in the absence of that signal, progressing contacts (16) to an open state.

    • An apparatus for a method of inhibiting and overriding the normal operating mode of one or more input devices connected to a communications network (14). The present invention functions within an electrical network made up of a plurality of input devices wherein a group of input devices is capable of commanding an electrical control device (18) to apply and remove electrical power from an electrical load connected thereto. The input devices or nodes communicate with the electrical control device over a communications network. When one of the input devices is turned off, the normal operating mode of all the other input sensors (16) are inhibited. The electrical control device remains inhibited until the input devices are no longer in the off position. Thus, electrical power to the load (22) controlled by the electrical control device remains disconnected until all input devices are in the on position. Local and remote signaling, control and indication diagnostic and monitoring functions are also provided.

    • A data bus (DB) includes a series of substations (U1-U12) which are connected to operational devices (NB1...) and connected at network points to earthed cable screens (KE) of neighbouring sections of power transmission lines (NK1...). They feed data into, or tap data from, the earth current circuits (ES1, ES2). A central control unit (ZSE) feeds in an interrogation message (GAB, KAT, TAB) addressed to the final substation (U12) in the series. This message is retransmitted by each successive substation down to the final substation, which on receiving the interrogation message feeds in a response message (KAT; AT12) addressed to the central control unit. Once it has received at least one response message, but only if there have been changes in status in connected operational devices, each successive substation also feeds in its own response message containing the changes in status.

    • A multichannel power distribution system (10, 30) for individually controlling power from a source to a plurality of loads (18) has individual power control devices (88) and at least one logic stage (48) responsive to status signals to impose preselected operational characteristics on the devices (88). In one embodiment, isolation circuitry (40) is provided between the power control devices (88) and the logic stage (48). The isolation circuitry (40) then includes a modulator (38) for converting the status signal to a status pulse train of modulated pulse width, and the logic stage (48) includes decoder logic (50, 52) for measuring the pulse width of the status pulse train. In another embodiment, the logic stage (48) is programmable to alter the operational characteristics of the devices (88) in response to external inputs.
