    • An apparatus and method to complete a lateral wellbore that can be utilized for existing or new wells. The apparatus can be set in tension with positive confirmation on surface of correct orientation and position. Additionally, the apparatus does not restrict the internal diameter of the liner or the central wellbore and permits full access to both the lateral and the primary wellbore below the junction. The invention includes a tie back assembly (140) disposed at an upper end of a liner string (135). The tie back assembly (140) includes a hanger (150), a packer (145) and a tubular housing (175). The housing includes a liner window (155) formed in a wall thereof to permit access to the lower primary wellbore. An inner tube (185) is disposed within the housing and includes a key (180) disposed on an outer surface for alignment with a window (105) formed in a wall of the casing and a no-go obstruction (190) with is constructed and arranged to contact a lower portion of the casing window to axially locate the tie back assembly in the primary wellbore.

    • Diverter tool (10) for diverting a pump-down tool (PDT, 22) along various branches of a pipeline (14). The diverter includes a flapper (20) to redirect the PDT along an alternate conduit (15) of a wye-section (16) of the pipeline. The flapper is hydraulically operated by an actuation chamber (19) at the lower end of the diverter. The entire diverter tool is capable of being installed in a side-pocket mandrel (12) of the pipeline adjacent the wye-section using such standard oil field equipment as a kickover tool. The entire diverter is also easily removable for servicing using a standard kickover tool.

    • A downhole system is deployed on wireline and includes a tool and a guide system on it a lower end of the tool for navigating past obstacles within a wellbore. A selectively rotatable tip member projects downward from the guide system. A side of the tip member is curved, so when the tool encounters an obstacle downhole, the tip member rotates so the curved side faces the obstacle and the downhole system can be urged past the obstacle. The guide system includes a sleeve and pedestal that abut one another on opposing ends that are complementarily profiled. When the sleeve and pedestal axially contact one another, the profiled ends produce relative rotation of the sleeve and pedestal. The pedestal is coupled with the tip member and the sleeve is coupled to the tool, so that the relative rotation of the sleeve and pedestal causes the tip member to rotate relative to the tool.

    • Adjustable drill string housings are described for use in the directional drilling of wellbores, e.g. wellbores for hydrocarbon recovery wells. The adjustable drill string housings permit adjustment of a bend angle in the housings without removing the housings from a wellbore. In some exemplary embodiments, the bend angle can be adjusted by changing the internal stresses in a support member carried by the housings. In other embodiments, the bend angle may be adjusted by causing failure of sacrificial support members carried by the housings, and the failure may be caused by delivering chemicals through a chemical delivery system to the sacrificial support members. Methods of operating the adjustable drill string housings include multi-lateral drilling operations wherein the bend angle is adjusted when a casing window has been detected.
