    • Embodiments of the invention include a dust extraction system including an array of two or more centrifugal dust removal devices, e.g., axial cyclones. The array of axial cyclones is configured to operate in parallel. The array of axial cyclones includes one or more sensor and a controller in communication with the sensor and adapted to receive air flow information from the one or more sensor. Inflow valves are operatively connected to the controller such that air flow through the array of axial cyclones is monitored and maintained at an optimum operating condition for each of the individual cyclones in the array. This is done, in general, by opening inflow valves as the air flow increases above a predetermined air flow value and shutting inflow valves as air flow decreases below the predetermined air flow value threshold.

    • The invention relates to a method and apparatus for separating two phases from each other. According to the invention, a stream made up of at least two phases is directed to a separation apparatus, which comprises a separation container (25) and cyclones (26) arranged in the flow direction in parallel and in succession, the cyclones having each an elongate separation chamber wherein the phases are separated from each other. According to the invention, the cyclones used are multi-inlet cyclones (26), the total number of which is at least 10. The stream to be treated is directed to each multi-inlet cyclone (26) in a substantially radial direction. Through the placement of a large number of multi-inlet cyclones in parallel, a purification element resembling a filter is obtained. In comparison to a filter, continuous regeneration takes place in the element, in which case the pressure loss does not increase during operation, since solids do not reduce the cross-sectional area of the flow conduit inside the element.

    • A method of separating particles from particle laden air is described. The apparatus employed is a multiple stage separator in which the first stage comprises a generally cylindrical chamber (18) having a hollow central member (50) extending axially from one end thereof with openings (53) in its wall remote from the said one end. The first separation step is achieved by introducing air tangentially into the chamber (18) near its said one end, the tangential entry in combination with an unapertured region of the wall of the central member (50) establishing a rotating mass of air in the chamber, thereby causing heavier than air particles to migrate to the outer regions of the chamber (18) under centrifugal force. Suction is applied to the interior of the central member (50) to cause an axial movement of air through the chamber before it can exit through the openings (53) in the wall of the central member (50). The suction force is selected such that particles near the walls of the chamber tend to continue in a generally rotational and axially progressive path into a particle collecting regions of the chamber (26), while relatively particle-free air is drawn radially inwardly, as it progresses axially, so as to exit to a second separation stage, through the openings in the central member wall.
