    • A wireless network provides controlled wireless communications with multi-mode wireless WTRUs. The wireless network has at least one base station having a transceiver operating in an infrastructure communication mode withmulti mode WTRUs and a controller that transmits control signals via infrastructure communications with a WTRU that control peer-to-peer mode communications of that WTRU with other WTRUs. A WTRU has transceiver components configured for selective operation in an infrastructure communication mode with a network base station and in a peer-to-peer communication mode with other WTRUs. The WTRU also has a transceiver controller configured to selectively control peer-to-peer mode communications with other WTRUs based on communication signals received in infrastructure communications with a network base station. Preferably, the transceiver controller is configured to control the transceiver components to switch between infrastructure communication mode and peer-to-peer communication mode based on Quality of Service criteria.

    • A method and system for wireless mobile unit communication within a wireless network having geographic areas for preferred communication usage is provided. An estimated geographic location of a mobile unit is determined. The mobile unit is provided with relative position data of at least one preferred communication area relative to the determined mobile unit estimated location. The mobile unit is then relocated to a preferred communication area based on the relative position data. Preferably, a request for a pre-designated preferred communication area location is initiated by a mobile unit transmission and received by a network base station. The mobile unit can be equipped with a global positioning system (GPS) to determine the mobile unit's estimated location. Transmission of estimated location data can be dependent upon whether the mobile unit or the network calculates relative position data.

    • A code division multiple access communication system has a plurality of base stations (12(1)-12(N)). Each base station (12(1)-12(N) (12)) transmits a primary synchronization code (PSC) in a primary synchronization channel (PSCH). A user equipment ((UEs) 14(1)-14(N) (14)) monitors the PSCH and correlates the PSCH with the PSC. Using a result of the PSC correlation, PSCH locations are identified having a PSC peak. For each identified PSCH location, a quality factor comprising a shape factor associated with that location's PSC peak is determined. For each identified PSCH location, that identified PSCH location and the quality factor is stored. The PSCH locations and quality factors are accumulated over a number of frames and are processed using logic at algorithms to produce a reliable PSC detection.
