    • This invention relates to the bonding together of composite metalbodies by diffusion bonding whereby a bond of sufficient strength is obtained that the bonded bodies can be used to form mechanical structures, such as aircraft sub-assemblies. A metal body is discribed which is capable of being diffusion bonded to another metal body to form a mechanical structure characterised in that the body carries bonded thereto two superposed layers comprising an outer liquation layer and an inner buffer layer wherein the body is capable of being diffusion bonded to the other body via its liquation layer, and wherein the compositions of the body, the buffer layer and the liquation layer are selected such that under the conditions of diffusion bonding the constituents of the liquation layer will diffuse more readily into the buffer layer than into the body. Preferably the body is of an aluminium alloy, for example one that is superplastically deformable.

    • A process for producing particles of magnesium spinel (magnesium aluminate) suitable for reinforcing metal matrix composites. The process involves mixing a waste material containing alumina or a precursor, such as dross residue, ESP dust or offgrade or contaminated alumina from Bayer process plants or molten salt electrolysis factories, with magnesium oxide or a precursor to produce a mixture, calcining the mixture at a temperature suitable to produce magnesium spinel (usually between 1450 and 1650 DEG C), and collecting particles of the magnesium spinel having a size in the range of 5-50 mu m, if necessary after comminuting larger particles to sizes in the desired range. Preferably, particle growth promoters may be added to the starting materials, examples being metal oxides and fluorides generally used in amounts of about 1-2 % by weight. The resulting inexpensive particles have a size suitable for metal matrix reinforcement and are substantially unreactive with molten aluminum and aluminum alloys.

    • The invention relates to a process for producing colour change devices incorporating latent indicia and colour change devices incorporating latent indicia produced by the process. The process involves anodizing a colour generating metal (11), having limited surface areas thereof covered by a mask (12), in the presence of an adhesion-reducing agent in order to produce a colour-generating laminate incorporating an anodic film (13) having detachable and non-detachable areas (b, a). The improvement of the invention involves forming the mask (12) from a masking material which permits anodization of areas of the surface covered by the mask while preventing the adhesion-reducing agent from exerting a substantial adhesion-reducing effect in the areas of the surface covered by the mask. The anodic film having the detachable and non-detachable areas (b, a) can then be formed by means of a single anodization step carried out in the presence of the adhesion-reducing agent. It is therefore unnecessary to employ two partial anodization steps as in the past, which simplifies the fabrication procedure and makes the procedure less expensive.
