    • A display element 10 comprises a reservoir 20 and a channel 30 connected to the reservoir 20. The channel 30 extends across an area including a visible area of the display element 10, and the reservoir 20 is substantially outside the visible area. The display element 10 further comprises at least one electrode and a luminescent fluid 40 in the reservoir 20 and movable, by means of signals applied to the at least one electrode, between a first position and a second position. In the first position, the luminescent fluid 40 is substantially contained in the reservoir 20 outside the visible area and in the second position, the luminescent fluid 40 extends along the channel 20 to occupy the visible area. The luminescent fluid 40 absorbs light in a first color waveband and converts the absorbed light to light in a second color waveband different from the first color waveband.

    • A method is described for obtaining an image dataset of an object comprising the steps of: providing a source of electromagnetic radiation adapted to emit radiation in a band other than the visible band and a radiation detector system adapted to detect radiation from the source spaced therefrom to define a scanning zone, wherein the detector system is capable of detecting and collecting spectroscopically resolvable information about radiation incident thereon; collecting a dataset of information about the intensity of radiation incident at the detector at least one and preferably a plurality of scanning positions; resolving the dataset spectroscopically to produce a spectroscopically resolved dataset relating incident intensity to frequency across at least a part of the spectrum of the source; mapping the spectroscopically resolved dataset from the spectrum of the source to the visible spectrum to produce a visible dataset by means of a mapping relation that maintains a functional relationship between frequency and intensity in the spectroscopically resolved dataset and frequency and intensity in the visible dataset; preferably generating an image. An apparatus for the same is also described.

    • A system and method to control the allocation of processor (or state machine) execution resources to individual tasks executing in computer systems is described. By controlling the allocation of execution resources, to all tasks, each task may be provided with throughput and response time guarantees. This control is accomplished through workload metering shaping which delays the execution of tasks that have used their workload allocation until sufficient time has passed to accumulate credit for execution (accumulate credit over time to perform their allocated work) and workload prioritization which gives preference to tasks based on configured priorities.

    • A method of and apparatus for obtaining radiation interactiondata and especially an image of an object which involves providing a radiation source such as an x-ray or gamma-ray source and a radiation detector system such as an x-ray or gamma-ray detection system spaced therefrom to define a scanning zone therebetween, the detector system being capable of detecting and collecting spectroscopically resolvable information about incident radiation; collecting one or more datasets of information about radiation incident at the detector after interaction with an object in the scanning zone at at least one and preferably a plurality of scanning positions, and preferably generating an image of an object in the scanning zone, and preferably a succession of images as the object moves through the scanning zone, from radiation received at the detector system; resolving each said intensity dataset across at least three frequency bands within the spectrum of the source; evaluating the ratio between measured intensities for at least two pairs of such frequency bands in a given intensity dataset and for example each successive such frequency band to obtain a numerical indicator in functional relationship with a material property; comparing the same with a library of data characteristic of target materials in order to obtain an indication of the likely material content of material producing such intensity dataset.
