    • The present invention relates to a telecommunication network and a routing method, wherein user data are routed via an access network (2) to a gateway device (5) of a core network (7) connected to the access network (2) via a first interface. The control of the gateway device (5) is performed by supplying a control information from the core network (7) to the gateway device (5) via a second interface, and the user data are routed directly between the access network (2) and the gateway device (5) via the first interface. Thus, the user data are routed directly from the access network (2) to the gateway (5), whereas the control can be performed via a dedicated and open control interface. Thereby, the processing resources can be shared between several applications and trunking gains can be utilized. Furthermore, real-time transport capabilities can be provided by a simple method of connecting the Internet to the mobile network.

    • A system and method of providing a prepaid subscriber service to a mobile subscriber in an integrated wireless telecommunications network (10) having a circuit-switched portion and a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) packet-switched portion. A prepaid subscriber class (PPSC) (40) is stored in a home location register (HLR)(16), and the PPSC is sent from the HLR to a serving mobile switching center (MSC) (11) when the subscriber registers in the circuit-switched portion of the network. The PPSC is sent from the HLR to a serving GPRS support node (SGSN)(12) when the subscriber registers in the packet-switched portion of the network. Also, the PPSC may be sent from the SGSN to a Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) (25) in order to indicate that the subscriber is a prepaid subscriber. When the mobile subscriber begins a packet-switched data session, the SGSN, GGSN, or both periodically send partial call data records (CDRs) to a prepaid center (PPC)(19). When the mobile subscriber begins a circuit-switched call, the MSC periodically sends partial CDRs to the PPC. The PPC calculates in near real time, a new account balance for the prepaid subscriber. The current call is disconnected, and prepaid services are stopped when the account balance is reduced to zero.

    • Methods and systems to provide a home system with information about a wireless unit roaming in a visited system based on information the wireless unit provides to the visited system. A mobile switching center (MSC-V) of the visited system receives the information from the wireless unit and routes a message to an international gateway. In response, the international gateway creates a new message or alters the original message, and transmits the new or altered message to a mobile switching center (MSC-H) of the home system. In response to receipt of the new or altered message, the MSC-H validates the wireless unit (if valid), creates a response to the new or altered message, and routes the response to the international gateway. The response may include an authorization period for the wireless unit and/or OCOS/TCOS information. In response, the international gateway creates a new response or alters the response, and transmits the new or altered response to the MSC-V. In response to receipt of the new or altered response, the MSC-V registers the wireless unit, provides the wireless unit with communication services in the visited system, or otherwise follows instructions in the new or altered response. If the wireless unit moves to an area served by a second MSC-V, the second MSC-V checks with the international gateway about the wireless unit. If an authorization period is in effect, the international gateway may provide a validation of the wireless unit to the second MSC-V without another message to the home system of the wireless unit.

    • A method of transmitting data in a packet radio network to a mobile station (MS) performing a routing area update. The packet radio network transmits data (2-1, 2-3) to the mobile station (MS) via a first support node (SGSN1). The mobile station (MS) sends a routing area update message (2-1) to a second support node (SGSN2), which sends to the first support node (SGSN1) a request (2-3) for context data (2-5) of the mobile station from the first support node. The first support node (SGSN1) sends (2-3c, 3-3c) from its memory, data addressed to the mobile station to the second support node. It then waits for a predetermined period of time (3-3b) before sending the data to the second support node (SGSN2). The predetermined time (3-3b) may be fixed, depending preferably on the quality of service of the connection used by the mobile station.     • The invention relates to a cellular packet radio network and to a method for updating a routing area in a packet radio network. Packet radio support nodes (SGSN) are connected to a digital cellular radio network (BSS), which provides a radio interface for the support nodes for packet-switched data transmission between the support nodes and mobile stations. There is a logical link between a mobile station (MS) and a serving packet radio support node (SGSN). The packet radio network utilizes logical routing areas, each of which comprises one or more cells. Each cell broadcasts information on the routing area to which it belongs. The mobile station sends a routing area update request to the packet radio network when it roams to a new cell which belongs to a different routing area than the old cell. The update request includes the identifiers of the old and new routing area. When the packet radio node detects a routing area update carried out by an unknown mobile station, it initiates the establishment of a logical link by sending a link establishment message (LLC Subm, 21, 21') to the mobile station, the message including the same identifier the mobile station used for itself in the routing area update request. The mobile station initializes the logical link at its own end and sends and acknowledgement to the serving packet radio support node.
