    • An ignition system of an engine has a coil which is spaced away from an igniter to protect the coil from heat of a combustion chamber and combustion gas leakage. The electrical connections between the coil and igniter of current design practice have not performed satisfactorily due to loosening of connections, absorbtion of energy within the connectors and the escape of electrical energy. The present ignition extender (24) overcomes these shortcomings by resiliently biasing a first electrical conducting core (26) into contact with a source of high energy (14) and a second electrical conduction core (30) into contact with an igniter (12) and insulating the first and second electrical conducting cores (26, 30) and a biasing and providing mechanism (34) from the surrounding environment by surrounding them with a first and second telescopingly arranged insulating members (38, 42). When included in an engine (16), the extender (24) is combined with a shield (44) to further protect and increase the functional life of the components.

    • An internal jumper cable system for jump-starting an internal combustion engine without an auxiliary external power source. This system utilizes the existing battery (12) of the engine being started as the sole power source for the starting and ignition circuits, but it bypasses all possible circuit elements and resistances in the ignition system by means of a jumper cable (34) to provide maximum power to the ignition coil (14). The system is universally applicable to all know makes and models of internal combustion engines. It may be used, under difficult starting conditions, in conjunction with a conventionl jumper system connected to an auxiliary external power source, each system augmenting the starting power provided by the other system.

    • A device for initiating combustion of fuels produces a high energy plasma jet by rapidly transferring energy from a capacitive section (14) thereof to an electrode section (16) integral therewith. A plurality of circular capacitor plates (42, 44) disposed in parallel, spaced relationship to each other within an electrically conductive, cylindrical casing (30) filled with dielectric fluid form the capacitive section (14). The capacitor plates (42, 44) are alternately connected to the casing (30) and to an elongate rod (18) which extends longitudinally through the casing (30). One end of the rod (18) extends outwardly from an end of the casing and includes a circularly shaped, pointed firing tip (20) which is spaced from the end of the casing (30) and defines one electrode of the device. The end (28) of the casing surrounding the shaft defines the other electrode such that the initial discharge between the electrodes is in the form of a cylindrical sheet. The cylindrical sheet discharge is quickly transformed into a plasma jet by magnetic fields.

    • A combustion initiation system includes an initiating device for producing, containing and propelling a combustion initiating plasma having an energy density approaching that produced by combustion of the fuel itself, and is suitable for initiating combustion in relatively lean mixtures of various types of fuels. A high voltage power supply (28) delivers electrical energy by a coaxial cable (58) to the initiating device (20) which communicates with a fuel mixture in a combustion area such as the combustion chamber of an ordinary internal combustion engine. The initiating device includes a capacitive portion (36) for storing a large quantity of electrical energy therein derived from the power supply, and an electrode portion integral with the capacitive portion which comprises a pair of concentric, rod shaped electrodes (30, 44) for producing a high energy, umbrella shaped plasma discharge, using the inverse pinch technique. Due to the close proximity between the capacitive and electrode portions of the initiating device, rapid energy transfer from the former to the latter creates high magnetic pressures which transform the discharge into a high energy plasma jet which is delivered well into the combustion area.
