    • An electromechanical cylinder lock-key combination comprises a cylinder housing (10) and a cylinder core (30) rotatably arranged in the cylinder housing and having a key-way (32) for receiving a key (20). A plurality of key actuated moveable blocking elements block the rotation of the cylinder core unless a correct key is inserted in the key-way. An optical code reader (46, 48) in the lock reads an optical code element provided on an inserted key. At least one of said blocking elements (39) functions as a bar element barring insertion of the key into the key-way unless a correct optical code element is provided on the key. By using at least one of the mechanical elements already present in the lock as part of the electronically controlled blocking mechanism, in combination with the use of an optical code requiring no moveable parts for the reading thereof, space requirements in the lock device are kept to a minimum.

    • An electromechanical cylinder lock (10) includes an outer lock shell (20) and a rotatable lock barrel (30) located therein which is controlled by dual locking features. A side bar or fence (60) selectively blocks and permits rotation of the barrel (30) with respect to the shell (20) in response to insertion of a key into a keyway (34) in the barrel. The barrel (30) includes a plurality of electromechanical locking members (50, 52, 54) with grooves (51, 53, 55) formed therein, the locking members (50, 52, 54) being movable to a position in which the grooves (51, 53, 55) are aligned to accept the side bar (60) or portions thereof. An electromagnetic core (300) disposed in the barrel is energized in response to a control device (C) which determines whether an attempt to open the lock is authorized, the magnetic core (300) rotating the electromechanical locking members (50, 52, 54) to a desired position relative to the side bar (60) to allow rotation of the barrel (30). The locking members may be flat disc-shaped elements (50, 52, 54) with a portion cut out to form a groove (51, 53, 55). As the electromagnetic core (or other electronically powered drive mechanism) and the locking members (50, 52, 54) are substantially entirely contained in the barrel (30), mechanical cylinder locks may be retrofitted to form an electromechanical lock by removing and replacing the purely mechanical barrel with the electronically driven barrel.

    • An electromechanical cylinder lock (Fig. 1) includes an outer lock shell (20) and a rotatable lock barrel (22) located therein which is controlled by dual locking features. A side bar or fence (60) selectively blocks and permits rotation of the barrel (22) with respect to the shell (20) in response to insertion of a key into a keyway (34) in the barrel (22). A slider bar (50) is movable between a blocking position in which the side bar (60) is prevented from permitting rotation of the barrel (22), and an unblocking position in which the side bar (60) permits rotation of the barrel (22). Alternately, a blocking mechanism (Fig. 19) is provided to block motion of tumbler pins in the cylinder lock (30). A shape memory alloy actuator (706), such as a wire made of nitinol, disposed in the barrel (22) is activated by an electric current in response to determination by an electronic control device whether an attempt to open the lock is authorized. Thermal interlock protection from external heating of the lock is also provided.
