    • A surgical guide rod holder (10) is provided for holding guide rods, surgical pins, bone pins and the like (64) during orthopedic surgery procedures. The apparatus has a frame (12) with a handle (14) and a barrel (16). The barrel (16) has two spaced apart supports (18, 19) that hold the pin or the rod (64). A multi-link assembly (51, 54, 42, 45, 39, 30) is operated by a trigger (53). The multi-link assembly moves between gripping and releasing positions when the surgeon rotates the trigger (53). The multi-link assembly includes a link member (65) that presses laterally against the pin or rod during gripping, forcing the pin (64) against the barrel (16). A turnbuckle (45) adjusts the multi-link assembly to provide greater or lesser "bite" for holding the rod or the pin (64), or for allowing holding of pins of different sizes.

    • An intramedullary nail (1) is expandable along its entire length enabling it to be inserted inside a broken bone in its non-expanded form and then expanded so as to secure the bone. Such insertion can be performed without drilling into the bone and the securing of a bone using such a nail alleviates the need for subsidiary pins or nails, thus reducing operation time. Such a nail may consist of a hollow tube with broken cross section which may be expanded by forcing an insert into the break in cross section thus prising it apart.

    • The additional surgical table usable for the extension and the reposition of a body extremity with a view to the preparation thereof for bone nailing, is characterized by a frame rolling on casters; the frame is comprised of a longitudinal support, having a proximal cross-bar and a distal cross-bar. The proximal cross-bar carries a counter-bearing; the distal cross-bar carries at each end a pivoting arm; each of those arms carries an orientable extension sleeve. In order to provide to the operators and to the video camera a free access to the operating field, the counter bearing (19) may be displaced vertically by means of a pipe fitted in the support (11) fixed to the proximal cross-bar. The distal cross-bar (14) is provided at each of its two ends with a fixed post (17, 18). Each of those two posts supports a pivoting arm (20, 30).

The adjusting element may cooperate with the nail follower such that the positions of the two targeting holes are adjustable so as to correspond to respective locking holes at a leading end of the intramedullary nail, even when the nail is bent.
