    • A Raster Image Processing (RIP) has a database of spot color patterns that are user definable and are patterns which are images of a textile, fabric, metal, etc., that are repeatedly printed across the job. The RIP interprets a spot color pattern name in print job, looks up the spot color in its database, pulls up the image associated with the spot color pattern name, adds Postscript® pattern code to the print job to paint the spot color across the background of the print job, realistically simulating the final print media, and adds other code to perform other tasks, such as mirroring or four-way mirroring to prevent stitches from appearing. A RIP user interface gives the user the ability to create, modify, or delete spot color patterns.

    • A scripting approach to managing the test bench complexity issue is provided. Partitioning the functionality of a test bench between Verilog and a scripting language allows for a significant reduction in compile times during ASIC verification. If done correctly, partitioning also offers great potential for re-use of test bench components. The Tcl language was chosen as a basis for implementing a library of PLI routines that allow fully customizable interpreters to be instantiated in Verilog test benches. This library allows multiple Tcl interpreters to be instantiated in a Verilog simulation. The Tcl interpreters can interact with the simulation and cause tasks to be executed in the Verilog simulation. It has been found the TCL PLI library is extremely valuable in speeding up verification efforts on multi-million gate ASICs.

    • Methods and systems for compression of digital images (10) (still or motion sequences) are provided wherein predetermined criteria may be used to identify a plurality of areas of interest (30, 12) in the image, and each area of interest is encoded with a corresponding quality level (Q-factor). In particular, the predetermined criteria may be derived from measurements (50) of where a viewing audience is focusing their gaze (area of interest). In addition, the predetermined criteria may be used to create areas of interest in an image in order to focus an observer's attention to that area. Portions of the image outside of the areas of interest are encoded at a lower quality factor and bit rate. The result is higher compression ratios without adversely affecting a viewer's perception of the overall quality of the image.

    • A method of printing multi-page documents with multiple raster-image processors (RIP's), the method comprising the steps of profiling the command stream complexities and resource dependencies of a series of pages to be printed. Then, associating a profile of the command stream complexities and resource dependencies of a series of pages to be printed with a printing command stream. And dispatching individual raster-image processor jobs for each of the pages to be printed to particular RIP's according to the profile. The step of dispatching is preferably such that the complexity estimates and the dependency list are used to minimize idle times for the RIP's. A further step of collecting is done in which the individual outputs of each raster-image processor are recombined into a page-ordered sequence for a print engine.

    • A method and system for scanning documents in a network environment and merging the resulting scan files with other documents into a printing workflow provides a user interface in which the user merges a scan file and a document file on a page basis by selecting thumbnail images of the desired pages and dragging and dropping the thumbnails so that a new merged document results. An alternative embodiment allows the user to apply predefined merge templated to the selected pages. The predefined merge templates may include printing and formatting instructions such as color settings and a page layout. The system architecture provides a color print server and a client workstation in communication with the color print server. A scanning device, which may be a dedicated scanner or the platen of a copying machine is connected to the color print server or the client workstation. The scanning software, resident on either the color print server or the workstation allows the user to customize the scan and apply modifications to the image after scanning. Scanned images may be retrieved by email or over the World Wide Web. The color print server and the attached scanning device may also function as a color copier.

    • An improved method and apparatus for reconstructing digitzed images processes one or more color formats, e.g. contone or 1-bit, and readily operates with both single and multiple scan systems. The preferred embodiment of the invention provides an image reconstruction path that receives a digitized image, e.g. from a scanner or from memory. The output of the image reconstruction path is a processed RGB or CMYK image that may be printed or stored in memory. The image reconstruction path itself is configured to operate in either of a multiple or single scan environment if the source of the digitized image is a scanner. Within the image reconstruction path there is a plurality of functional units that can be controlled by user or internal controls, or that can be optionally bypassed. These functional units include a preliminary color adjustment function, an automatic deskew function, a background and dust removal function, a descreen function, a text detection and enhancement function, a color conversion function, a scaling function, and a color manipulation function.

    • A method and corresponding system for tracking variations in distance D calculated from time-of-flight measurements of a sequence of pulses of a pressure wave oscillation from a transmitter to a receiver identifies a state of synchronous operation by obtaining at least two time-of-flight measurements derived from successive pressure wave pulses which satisfy given synchronicity criteria. Successive time-of-flight measurements are then monitored to identify a shifted time-of-flight measurement which varies by at least half of the wave period from a predicted time-of-flight value calculated from a number of preceding time-of-flight measurements. A shift factor is then identified corresponding to an integer multiple of the wave period by which the shifted time-of-flight measurement must be corrected to obtain a corrected time-of-flight measurement falling within half of the wave period from the predicted time-of-flight value. The distance D calculated from the shifted time-of-flight measurement is then corrected by the product of the shift factor and the pressure wave wavelength.
