    • The invention provides a device to facilitate self-catheterisation in women suffering from deviation from normal bladder function. The device comprises a handle designed for manipulation by a patient and a catheter co-operable with the handle such that the catheter can be inserted into a patient's urethra by manipulation of the handle, the device being provided with a flexion portion to allow the catheter to be positioned in a desired orientation relative to the handle. The handle and catheter may be designed as a one-piece disposable construction, or may be separate elements, the handle being re-usable with disposable catheters. The flexion portion may be an articulation means, such as a ball-and-socket joint. Catheterisation is further facilitated by the provision of a mirror and/or a light source on or associated with the handle.

    • The invention relates to a separator, which is particularly useful for separating cellular matter. The separator utilises the phenomenon known as dielectrophoresis (DEP). A DEP force effects a particle suspended in a medium. The particle experiences a force in an alternating electric field. The force is proportional to, amongst other things, the electrical properties of the supporting medium and the particle and the frequency of the electric field. The separator, of the present invention, comprises a chamber (10) and a plurality of electrodes (12) disposed in the chamber (10). An electric field established across electrodes subjects some of the particles to a stronger force than others such that they are confined within the chamber. Particles which are not confined are removed from the chamber by the supporting medium which is preferably urged through the chamber. Valves (101 and 202) are provided on exhausts of the chamber. The invention is able to separate two different particles continuously.

    • The invention provides an improved method and apparatus, for measuring gas flow velocity. The invention is particular well suited for use in measuring flow velocity of noxious and/or explosive gases in a corrosive environment such as landfill sites. Gas flow velocity is measured by varying the energy content of a volume of gas at a first preselected point (18) thereby creating a thermal label in a flow path (1) and detecting the said variation in energy at subsequent preselected points (34) in the flow path. The time taken for peaks of these thermal labels to pass detectors (34) enables flow velocity to be calculated. This may be achieved by a computer at a remote position. Preferably the energy content is reduced by injecting an amount of liquefied gas (17) into the gas flow path. The invention avoids the use of heaters and there is therefore no risk of sparks occurring which may ignite explosive gas mixtures.
