    • The invention relates to a vacuum skin packaging process, to a tray suitable for a vacuum skin packaging process and to the package thus obtained. The vacuum skin packaging process of the invention comprises providing a tray loaded with a product said tray comprising a bottom wall, a side wall upwardly extending from said bottom wall and terminating in an outwardly projecting horizontal rim, said side wall comprising at least one hole; placing the product loaded tray in a vacuum chamber; positioning a film above the product loaded tray; forming an airtight contact between the film and the rim of the tray; evacuating air from above the film to bring it into contact with a heating platen to heat the film; evacuating air from within the tray through the at least one hole; introducing air from above the film pushing the film in contact with the product and welding it to the inner surface of the tray closing the at least one hole in the side wall characterised in that the film is held in contact with the heating platen while air begins to be evacuated from within the tray. Preferably the film is positioned above the product loaded tray is a discrete piece of film having the size of the tray thus reducing the amount of film which is scrapped during a vacuum skin packaging process.

    • The invention is a method and system of repackaging a packaged item having a representation of a unique identification code attached to the original package. The packaged item having a first unique identification code may be removed from its original packaging and be repackaged in a replacement package and information associated with the first unique identification code may be associated with a second unique identification code. A representation of the second unique identification code may be attached to the replacement package so that the information associated with the item may be recalled at a desired time. The invention may help reduce or limit the possibility of losing information that is unique to the repackaged item. The information associated with the item may also be used to determine an appropriate type of replacement package for the item so that the overall efficiency of repackaging an item may be improved.

    • The present invention relates to a process for thermoforming a foamed polyester sheet of low crystallinity to produce a heat-resistant molded foam article (13). The process comprises the steps of heating a foamed polyester sheet (10) to a preforming temperature by contact with at least one heating plate and molding the heated foamed polyester sheet onto a non-heated mold (30). The present invention further relates to a process for manufacturing a package by thermoforming a foamed polyester sheet of low crystallinity to produce a heat-resistant molded foam container, loading a product (51) into said container and sealing or welding a film of thermoplastic material (61) onto said container to close it. The heat-resistant molded foam articles and the packages thus obtained are excellent in heat resistance and are not thermally distorted even when heated in a microwave or conventional oven. They are particularly useful for the packaging of food products for dual ovenable applications.

    • The invention provides a multilayer film having an oxygen transmission rate of about 10,000 cc (STP)/m 2 /day/atm or greater at 23° C and 0% relative humidity, a modulus of about 15,000 psi or greater in at least one direction. The multilayer film can be used for packaging a wide variety of products requiring regulation o f oxygen permeability under varying packaging conditions because the multilayer film is capable of providing a relatively high OTR without sacrificing the mechanical properties that may be necessary for many packaging applications. The multilayer film may include a sealant layer, a stiffening layer, and a core layer disposed between the sealant and stiffening layers. In one embodiment, the sealant layer comprises a polyethylene having a density of less than 0.93 g/cc; the core layer consists of an ethyl ene/alpha-olefin having a density of 0.90 g/cc or less; and the stiffening layer comprises a styrene/butadiene/styrene block copolymer having a modulus of about 250,000 psi.
