    • A casing string is augmented with one or more variable flow resistance devices or "vibrating tools" to facilitate advancement of the casing and distribution of the cement in the annulus once the casing is properly positioned. The method includes vibrating the casing string while advancing the casing down the wellbore or while the cement is pumped into the annulus, or both. After the cementing operation is completed, the devices may be drilled out to open the casing string for further operations. The casing string assembly may include a vibrating tool at the end in place of a conventional float shoe or float collar. Multiple vibrating tools can be employed in the casing string, and they may be combined with conventional float shoes and collars. Additionally, vibrating tools in the form of plugs can be pumped down and landed inside the casing string.

    • An apparatus and method for retrieving debris from the well bore of an oil or gas well. The apparatus comprises a junk basket with a flow passage that allows fluid to be jetted out end of the tool while the tubing string is advanced to stir up the debris in the well fluids and facilitate capture of the debris in the strainer basket. Importantly, upon encountering a plug of sand or other debris in the well bore, fluid flow through the tool can be increased to work on the plug until it breaks apart. Advancement of the tubing string can be halted and resumed, as needed, in combination with control of the fluid flow through the tool until the junk basket is full or the targeted debris is collected, whereupon the junk basket is withdrawn. The junk basket may be deployed on coiled tubing or a string of drill pipe.

    • A method and system for installing a Christmas tree in place of a blowout preventer on a wellhead. The donut in the wellhead BOP is landed using a coiled tubing injector. Then the wellhead BOP then is removed and the Christmas tree is installed also using the same crane that supported the coiled tubing injector. This employs the coiled tubing rig already in use at the well site for a previous operation, such as plug drilling or perforating and fracturing. Notably, the system provides a second seal, such as a ceramic disk, below the donut, for added safety while the Christmas tree is installed. The tool string used to install the donut includes a safety union so that the tool string can be disconnected after the donut is landed and locked into place.

    • A circulating valve assembly can include a valve controlling flow between an interior and an exterior of the assembly, another valve controlling flow between sections of a flow passage extending through the assembly, and an actuator that both opens one valve and closes the other valve in response to each of multiple positive pressure differentials from the interior to the exterior. A system for use with a well can include a circulating valve assembly controlling flow through a tubular string and a well tool connected in the tubular string downstream of the assembly. In one configuration of the assembly, the flow passes through the well tool. In another configuration, the flow passes from the tubular string to an annulus external to the tubular string, with the flow substantially bypassing the well tool. The assembly cycles between the configurations in response to alternating increases and decreases in the flow.
