    • A method for operating an access point in a wireless local area network (WLAN) is provided. The access point includes a directional antenna for communicating with at least one remote station in a forward link based upon an exchange of packet data comprising a plurality of control frames and a data frame. The directional antenna includes a plurality of antenna patterns. The method includes receiving a first control frame via a first antenna pattern of the directional antenna from the remote station, transmitting a first data frame to the remote station, and receiving a second control frame via a second antenna pattern of the directional antenna from the remote station. A signal quality of the first control frame received via the first antenna pattern and a signal quality of the second control frame received via the second antenna pattern are measured. The respective measured signal qualities associated with the first and second antenna patterns are compared.

The base station receiver provides respective signal to noise estimations indicating one of the antennas has a signal to noise ratio that is better than the signal to noise value provide by any other antenna. The base station (102) uses this antenna for the dedicated channel that is transmitted to the mobile station (140).

    • A system and method for multiple rank modulation transmission in a Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) or Multiple-Input Single-Output (MISO) system is provided. The method includes receiving at a transmitter, a signal with a plurality of bits and separating the received signal into a rank index bit block and a signal modulation bit block. The signal modulation bit block is encoded in a signal modulation scheme for transmission. The rank index bit block is used to select a rank to be activated, wherein the activated rank contains at least one active transmitter antenna and the encoded signal modulation bit block is transmitted via the activated rank being at least one activated transmitter antenna. The transmitted encoded signal modulation bit block is received via the receive antenna and a receiver a rank index and a transmitted symbol estimated from the received signal. The signal modulation bit block is finally decoded.
