    • The casing (12A) of a hand-held instrument (12) provides a contact surface for a capacitive switching circuit (33A) for energizing a controlled device (63). The switching circuit and device are remote from the contact area. The switching circuit (33A) includes an input circuit (80) incorporating the body capacitance and a variable capacitor (81) which is adjusted to balance the circuit in the presence of only stray capacitance without body capacitance so that the switching circuit remains unactuated. The addition of body capacitance will actuate the switching circuit. In the illustrated embodiment, the input circuit (80) is energized by a periodic signal. An output signal is coupled from the switching circuit to the controlled device through a delay off circuit (88) which has a delay time longer than the period of the periodic signal so that if contact with the instrument is lost momentarily, there is no interruption in the controlled function. This is particularly advantageous in the case of a medical device or dental handpiece where light from a high intensity source is coupled back to the instrument for illuminating the work area.

    • Multipolar electrosurgical device (22) for use in neurosurgery or through the channel of an endoscope or other precision surgery procedures. The device is formed with an insulative probe body (40), which, in the described embodiment, is sized to pass through a channel of an endoscope to enable the electrocoagulation of blood vessels such as may be needed in the treatment of a gastrointestinal ulcer. The probe body is provided with electrically separate conductors (46, 48) which are formed of a plurality of electrodes (46.1, 46.2, 46.3, 48. 1, 48.2, 48.3) distributed over the peripheral surface of the probe body. A plurality of at least six electrodes which can form six bipolar electric fields are formed which in one embodiment are aligned longitudinally on the probe body. The electrodes extend onto the probe body's distal end to provide an omnidirectionally effective electrosurgical device. A central conductive wash channel (57) is provided for electrical connection to a set of electrodes at the distal end of the probe body while also providing a passage for fluid to enhance the visibility of the target area for subsequent precise electrocoagulation of the device. Several embodiments are shown and described.

    • A dental handpiece (10) having an improved water/air spray system including a pair of substantially parallel tubes (22, 23), one for water and the other for chip air, extending through the handle (11) of the handpiece and terminating in a nozzle chamber (21) of oval cross section. The tubes (22, 23) are generally cylindrical but are partially deformed at their distal ends, such deformation constituting a flattening of adjacent wall portions (22a, 22b) of the respective tubes. Such adjacent wall portions are disposed in contiguous relation and are cut away for a limited distance at the discharge end of the tube assembly to define the unitary nozzle chamber (21). The chamber has an oval discharge orifice (21a) for directing an elliptical spray pattern towards the tip of the dental bur. At the opposite end of the handpiece (10), the handle (11) is equipped with a plug (13) terminating in an external end face (17). Tubular extensions (15b, 23c) project from that end face for conveying air to the drive air and chip air passages (15, 23). An open channel (30) formed in the end face (17) of the plug (13) communicates with annular recesses (26, 27) disposed about such extensions, and each extension is provided with a lateral aperture (28, 29) communicating with the surrounding recess. The open side of the channel (30) and the ends of the recesses (26, 27) are sealed by a sealing member (32) when the handpiece is in operation.

    • A decanting centrifuge (10) particularly useful for clinical laboratory procedures requiring the washing and packing of red cells or other particles. An electromagnet (18) having upper (28) and lower (29) planar pole faces rotates to drive a removable rotor head assembly (40) and, during the decant cycle, holds a plurality of magnetically attractable tube carriers (43) in substantially vertical positions against its planar pole faces (28, 29) so that supernatant liquid is centrifugally discharged from the open upper ends of the tubes (57). Each tube carrier (43) comprises a tube-holding member (50) and a contact member (51), both of which have their upper end portions pivotally suspended from a support ring (46) which is provided by the rotor assembly (40) and which is coaxial with the rotatable magnet (18). The planar surfaces of the contact members (64) engage the planar pole faces (28, 29) when the centrifuge (10) is at rest and also when the electromagnet (18) is energized and the rotor assembly (40) is rotated to decant the liquid contents of the centrifuge tubes (57). Each tube-holding member (50) has two outer side walls (50b) which meet along converging planes so that such walls (50b) will engage a centrifuge tube (57) along a pair of spaced parallel lines (63) during centrifuge operation, thereby permitting centrifuge tubes (57) of different selected outside dimensions to be supported within the open-topped cavity of such tube-holding member (50).
