摘要： Apparatus and methods for deflecting a beam, preferably a laser beam are disclosed. The invention resides in the use of two deflectors with the deflection provided by the second deflector (30) at least partially counteracting the deflection provided by the first deflector (75). This allows a laser beam to be pointed to a selected spot for a predetermined dwell time and allows for rapid movement of the laser beam from point to point. Preferably, an inertia-limited mechanical deflector, such as a galvanometer mirror (75) or piston mirror is used to deflect the laser beam and a diffractive deflector, such as an acousto-optic deflector (30), is used to at least partially counteract the deflection of the mechanical deflector. It can be arranged that the laser beam points to a stationary position in space for a predetermined dwell time or for the laser beam to scan over a predetermined path.

摘要： Methods, systems and apparatus for manipulating electromagnetic radiation such as laser beams. A method and apparatus for correcting magnification chromatic aberration utilises one or more dispersive lenses such that long wavelength components are magnified less than short wavelength components. A telecentric relay is preferred to achieve this aim. Further, the use of polarisers to block the undesired zeroth order components of diffraction emanating from acousto-optic deflectors (AODs) is disclosed. Furthermore, specific designs of AOD including narrow transducer AODs which produce a diverging acoustic wave and AODs having two transducers and a selection switch are disclosed. Further, the invention provides methods, systems and apparatus for allowing the wavelength of radiation to be changed, for providing a user selectable degree of compensation, for providing a scanning and/or a pointing system and for providing a compact system that does not require telecentric relays between adjacent acousto-optic deflectors.

摘要： A method of producing a particle cassette for a needleless syringe device which alleviates problems of providing a chamber for the confinement of particles which is hermetically sealed from the environment. A predetermined force is applied in the longitudinal direction to push first and second cassette parts together so as to cause plastic deformation of a portion of the first cassette part so as to create said hermetically sealed chamber. The cassette parts are preferably made of PETG and have bonded thereto rupturable membranes preferably made of PET. The sealing is preferably achieved at the end of a protrusion on the first cassette part which is tapered and which interacts with the membrane of the second cassette part.

摘要： A brake that can particularly be applied to a linear motor has a gripping member (220) that can move axially within the housing of the brake. The gripping member is lightly urged against the rotor (16) of the linear motor such that movement of the rotor in one direction causes the gripping member to grip the rotor more strongly and movement of the rotor in the other direction causes the gripping member to grip the rotor less strongly. The gripping member (220) can be completely disengaged from the rotor and can be held in the disengaged position by an electromagnet (300). Upon the cessation of power to the electromagnet (for example if there is a power interruption), the gripping member automatically moves in a direction that allows it to grip the rotor (16) more strongly and thus provides a fail-safe brake. The brake can be moved into its deactivated position using the power only from the linear motor. There is also disclosed a use for a helical tension spring wound in a loop, the spring acting as both a linear bearing and as a means for providing a radially inward force. Methods of disengaging and applying a brake are also disclosed.
