    • The present invention is a device for stabilizing moving tissues or an organ such as the heart within the body during a surgical procedure such as a coronary artery bypass graft procedure. The device comprises a stem (65) having proximal and distal ends, a compressible ball (66) slideably attached onto the stem, and at least one foot (68 or 69) connected to the distal end of the stem. Each foot extends laterally from the stem and has a distal surface for placement on moving tissue (138). The device also comprises a retractor mount (20) with a first locking means for operational engagement with the compressible ball on the stem for adjustably holding the stem in a desired orientation during the surgical procedure. The device also comprises a second locking means for releaseably attaching the stem to the surgical retractor.

    • Devices and a method are provided to assist a surgeon in ablating conduction paths in tissue, such as a heart. A device can be configured to operate as a template that adheres to the tissue surface, and allows the surgeon to more easily sever the conduction path to form a lesion in a desired location. In particular, the template can be used to guide the surgeon's use of a surgical instrument along a desired ablation path. In some cases, the template may incorporate hardware that structurally supports the instrument for travel along the ablation path. A surgical instrument such as an ablation probe, e.g., radio frequency, laser, ultrasonic, microwave, thermal, chemical, mechanical, or cryogenic ablation probe, may be used to sever the conduction paths. Measurements made substantially contemporaneously with the conduction path ablation operation may be used to evaluate whether the desired degree of ablation has been achieved. The device may also incorporate feedback to compare the desired degree of conduction path ablation with the measured degree, and may deactivate the surgical instrument when the desired degree has been achieved. In some cases, the template device can be configured to provide local stabilization of organ tissue, particularly for a moving organ such as a beating heart. In other cases, the template device may provide little or no stabilization, but provide a guide structure for placement of the ablation probe in the same frame of motion as the moving tissue. Also, for some applications, the template device may be arranged to facilitate application of other therapeutic devices, such as diagnostic probes, pacing leads, and drug delivery devices, to the surface of a moving organ.

    • Disclosed is a device for isolating a cardiac surgical site. The device comprises a first finger (10) having a clinging accessory (30) for attaching the first finger to a heart (140), a second finger having a clinging accessory (30) for attaching the second finger (12) to the heart (140), a first joint disposed on the first finger (10) so that the first finger (10) may rotate on a surface of the heart such that said rotation stretches a surgical site, a first stopper (24) disposed on the first finger (10) for preventing undesired rotation of the first finger (10) to isolate the surgical site, and a link (18) for coupling the first finger (10) to the second finger (12). Several embodiments of the fingers and clinging accessories are disclosed. A guard (1602) is provided to protect sutures from the clinging accessory. The guard (1712) is equipped with a sprayer to wash the surgical site. Also disclosed is a method of isolating a cardiac surgical site. The method comprises the steps of disposing a first finger on a heart, clinging the first finger to the heart surface, disposing a second finger on a heart, clinging the second finger to the heart surface, and then rotating the first finger for achieving selective isolation of the heart surface.

    • An organ manipulator including at least one suction member or adhesive disc mounted to a compliant joint, a flexible locking arm for mounting such suction member or compliant joint, and a method for retracting and suspending an organ in a retracted position using suction (or adhesive force) so that the organ is free to move normally (e.g., to beat or undergo other limited-amplitude motion) in at least the vertical direction during both steps. In preferred embodiments, a suction member exerts suction to retract a beating heart and suspend it in a retracted position during surgery. As the retracted heart beats, the compliant joint allows it to expand and contract freely (and otherwise move naturally) at least in the vertical direction so that hemodynamic function is not compromised. The suction member conforms or can be conformed to the organ anatomy, and its inner surface is preferably smooth and lined with absorbent material to improve traction without causing trauma to the organ. The compliant joint can connect the member to an arm which is adjustably mounted to a sternal retractor or operating table. The compliant joint can be a sliding ball joint, a hinged joint, a pin sliding in a slot, a universal joint, a spring assembly, or another compliant element. In preferred embodiments, the method includes the steps of affixing a suction member to a beating heart at a position concentric with the heart's apex, and applying suction to the heart while moving the member to retract the heart such that the heart has freedom to undergo normal beating motion at least in the vertical direction during retraction.
