    • A mass spectrometer is disclosed comprising an ion guide. The ion guide comprises a hollow tubular conductor (1) having a wall. One or more electrodes are provided in the wall of the tubular conductor (1). An exit aperture (3) is provided in the wall of the tubular conductor (1) downstream of the one or more electrodes (2). An AC or RF voltage is applied to the one or more electrodes (2) and a DC potential difference is maintained between the wall of the tubular conductor (1) and the one or more electrodes (2). The combination of a DC voltage gradient and applying an AC or RF voltage to the electrodes (2) is that ions are confined radially to a region which is preferably close to the one or more electrodes (2). Ions are preferably extracted from the ion guide via the exit aperture (3) by maintaining a pressure gradient between the inside of the tubular conductor (1) and the outside of the tubular conductor (1) and/or by maintaining a DC electric field which acts to extract ions through the exit aperture (3).

The ion trap enables a large number of ions to be trapped and ejected simultaneously.

    • A method of mass spectrometry or ion mobility spectrometry is disclosed comprising: providing ions towards an ion storage region(10); selecting a target maximum charge desired to be stored within the ion storage region (10) at any given time;and reducing the ion current passing to the ion storage region (10) such that the ions entering the ion storage region (10) do not cause the total charge within the storage region (10) to rise above said target maximum charge. The step of reducing the ion current passing to the ion storage region (10) comprises: temporally separating the ions according to their ion mobility in an ion mobility separator (4); and mass filtering the ions according to mass to charge ratio with a mass filter (6). Said steps of separating and mass filtering the ions result in substantially only target ions having selected combinations of ion mobility and mass to charge ratio being transmitted towards the ion storage region (10). The method further comprises accumulating the target ions within the ion storage region (10) during an ion accumulation period.

    • A method of analysing ions is disclosed comprising performing an initial multi- dimensional survey scan comprising separating parent ions according to a first physico- chemical property (e.g. ion mobility) and then separating the parent ions according to a second physico-chemical property (e.g. mass to charge ratio). A plurality of parent ions of interest are then determined from the initial multi-dimensional survey scan. Once parent ions of interest have been determined, the plurality of parent ions of interest are sequentially selected based upon the first and second physico-chemical properties during a single cycle of separation. The parent ions of interest may then be fragmented and corresponding fragment ions may then be mass analysed.
