    • There is provided a method of increasing boot-up speed in a computer system (10). The system (10) includes computing devices (20) for processing data and a data store (60) coupled thereto for providing data to and receiving data from the devices (20). The store (60) is operable to write and/or read data in several regions (T1, T2, T3) of a data medium (200). Access between the regions is subject to associated jump delays (SK1/2, SK2/3; SK1/3, SL3/2). The store (60) includes a cache (320) for temporarily storing data read from and/or for writing data to the medium (200). On initial boot-up of the system (20), a log is made of a sequence in which the regions (T1, T2, T3) are accessed. Moreover, on subsequent boot-up of the system (10), the log is used to store data read from the medium (200) temporarily in the cache (310, 320) so as to provide for a more temporally efficient sequence of accessing the regions (T1, T2, T3) for speeding up said subsequent boot-up.

    • The present invention relates to a scheme for defect management for an optical record carrier, for instance an SFFO disc, in a mobile environment. The record carrier comprises fragments of data, each fragment (Fn to Fn+2) comprising one or more blocks. A fragment has a size of approximately 5 MB and will be read and written in one sweep by the apparatus. Spare areas are present on the disc for re-mapping defect blocks to a spare area. These spare areas are located in the fringes of the fragments. The result is fully optimised to reduce power consumption without compromising the defect management. Associating a spare area with a fragment has the advantage that there will be no additional seek overhead, which will save power. Defect management can be implemented by the drive, so the application is unaware of the re-mapping. Real-time guarantees can be met, because reading a re-mapped block will not cause jumping in the program area of the disc. The spare area may only be read when needed.

    • The invention relates to an ad-hoc network (100) comprising a network device (201) for configuration management. The network device (201) comprises a traffic monitoring processor (211) which monitors traffic between different network elements. The network device (201) further comprises a configuration processor (213) which determines combined configuration information for at least a first and second network element in response to the monitored traffic. The combined configuration information is stored in a data store (215) and may be communicated to other network elements. The network device (201) may thus derive combined configuration information which relates to more than one network element and may specifically determine combined configuration information in the context of location, connections and history of the ad-hoc network (100). The stored combined configuration information may be used to initiate a replacement network element or to emulate the functionality of an existing network element. It may also be used for error detection.

    • The present invention relates to methods and a system for managing digital rights. The invention is based on the idea that a digital voucher (100) is provided with access control information for accessing digital content located on a server (104) of a content provider. A consumer of the digital content reads the voucher (100) by means of a bar code reader, an RF detector (102) or the like. This reading means (102) is connected to some computing means (103) such as a computer, a mobile phone, a PDA, a set-top box etc. The computing means (103) transfers the access control information to a server (104) of a content provider. The server (104) to which the access control information is transferred processes the access control information, and depending on the result of the processing, the computing means (103) is given different levels of access to digital content located on the server (104).

    • The present invention relates to a method and a system for identifying an item (1) to which a radio frequency tag is attached by means of a radio frequency tag detector (101), wherein radio frequency contact is established between the tag and the detector (101) and information associated with the item (1) and being stored by the tag is received by the detector (101). The invention is based on the idea that the data stored by the tag is mapped against a unique item identifier. This unique item identifier is then presented for a user of the detector (101). By employing the present invention, it is possible to identify an item (1) by attaching a small tag to it. This is particularly advantageous in the case where the item (1) to which the tag is attached is very small, such that it is practically difficult to write information on the item (1) itself or on the item casing.

    • A storage device for recording and retrieving information blocks on a removable record carrier is described. Via an interface (44) the device receives commands, user data blocks and meta data blocks comprising file management information. The device has a non-volatile memory (31), a meta data block detection unit (47), and a control unit (20). The device temporarily stores the meta data blocks in the non-volatile memory until detecting an update condition, e.g. an eject command. The update condition indicates that the removable record carrier is to be updated to a state in which the record carrier is usable in a different storage device. In the event that the update condition has been detected the meta data blocks are transferred from the non-volatile memory to the record carrier (49).
