    • An optical network includes optically pumped waveguide amplifiers (23). A supervisory signal uses the amplifier's pump wavelength (23), e.g. APPROX 1480 nm if EDFAs are used. Substandard pump diodes may be used to generate the supervisory signal. A repeater station for the network includes an optically pumped waveguide amplifier (23) and a bypass route (27, 28, 29, 30, 31) for supervisory signals. In a described example the bypass route comprises an optical supervisory signalling means (31), an optical receiver (29), a first wavelength division multiplexer (27) for coupling a supervisory signal from a transmission medium and applying it to the optical receiver, processing means (30) for processing supervisory signal data received by the receiving means and controlling the optical supervisory signalling means to generate a further supervisory signal, and a second wavelength division multiplexer (28) for coupling the further supervisory signal into the transmission medium, wherein the first and second wavelength division multiplexers are arranged one on either side of the waveguide amplifier.

    • A voice activity detector (26) comprising an input for receiving an outgoing speech signal transmitted from a speech system (2) to a user and an input for receiving an incoming signal from the user. Both the outgoing and incoming signals are divided into time limited frames. Means (263) are provided for calculating a feature from each frame of the incoming signal and for forming a function of the calculated feature and a threshold. Based on the function, it is determined whether or not the incoming signal includes speech. Means are provided to determine the echo return loss during an outgoing speech signal from the interactive speech system and to control the threshold in dependence on the echo return loss measured.

    • Faults occurring in a telecommunications system (21) are monitored identifying their time of onset and reporting them to an operator through an interface (16) if they have not cleared within a predetermined interval. Transient faults, which do clear within that interval, are not reported directly, but only if such faults occur more frequently than a predetermined rate. This is determined by establishing a scan interval, and an analysis period equal to a plurality of scan intervals, monitoring the system (21) continuously for the occurrences of faults, and storing their times of occurrence in a store (8). At the end of each scan interval, the number of occurrences of the fault during the analysis period which ends at the end of the scan interval are counted by a counter (11). If the number of occurrences of the fault in the analysis period is equal to or greater than a threshold value selected by user input (16), an alarm indicator (17) is activated. This allows isolated transient faults to be disregarded, allowing the user to concentrate on recurrent intermittent faults.
