The disclosed methods utilize an explant prepared from an immature soybean seedling which can be induced directly to form shoots that give rise to transgenic plants via organogenesis. The collapsed orientation includes a smaller height to facilitate insertion into the patient. The expanded orientation includes a larger height for spacing and/or supporting the vertebral members. The implants (10) generally include three or more separate sections (20,30,40) that are nested together in the collapsed orientation. The sections move outward away from each other in the expanded orientation. An expansion means may be operatively connected to one or more of the sections to move the implants between the orientations. 摘要： The present invention is an apparatus and method for stabilizing the facet joints (18) of the spine. One aspect of the present invention is the stabilization of the facet joint (18) by insertion of a facet implant (20) through two opposing facet surfaces (22A, 24A). The facet implant (20) includes a proximal, distal and intermediate member (26, 28, 30, respectively). The distal member (28) is inserted through the facet joint (18) and into a facet surface (22A, 24A). The intermediate member (30) is then placed in the area between the facet surfaces (22 A, 24A). The proximal member (26) then is brought closer to the distal member (28) to deploy the intermediate member (30) into the space between the facet surfaces (22A, 24A). Once deployed, the intermediate member (30) provides a cushioning or restoring force to the facet joint (18) such as to stabilize movement of the joint (18).
