    • Optical connectors are provided for connecting sets of optical wavcguides (104), such as optical fiber ribbons to each other, to printed circuit boards, or to backplanes. The provided connectors (100) include a housing (110) that has an attachment area (102) for receiving and permanently attaching a plurality of optical waveguides. Additionally, the provided connectors include a light coupling unit (120) disposed in and configured to move with the housing. The provided connectors also include a second attachment area (108) for receiving and permanently attaching to the plurality of optical waveguides that causes each optical waveguide to be bent between the two attachment areas. The provided connectors utilize expanded beam optics with non-contact optical mating resulting in relaxed mechanical precision requirements. The provided connectors can have low optical loss, are easily scalable to high channel count (optical fibers per connector) and can be compatible with low insertion force blind mating.

    • A projection system is disclosed. The projection system includes a projector that sequentially emits first images having a first polarization state for viewing by a left eye and second images having the first polarization state for viewing by a right eye. The projection system further includes a front projection screen that scatters the sequentially emitted first and second images. The front projection screen reflects light having the first polarization state, and absorbs light having a second polarization state, where the second polarization state is perpendicular to the first polarization state. The projection system also includes a viewing device that includes a first shutter that is synchronized with the projector and transmits the first, but not the second, images scattered by the front projection screen. The viewing device also includes a second shutter that is synchronized with the projector and transmits the second, but not the first, images scattered by the front projection screen. Each of the first and second shutters has a pass axis that lies along the first polarization axis and a block axis that lies along the second polarization axis.

    • In one example, this disclosure describes a circuit and techniques that may be used to measure the ion balance in an ionization balance device (10). The described circuit comprises a capacitor (22) that includes two conductors (23, 24), wherein a first one (23) of the conductors is exposed to the output of the ionization device, and the second one (24) of the conductors is shielded from the output of the ionization device. The first conductor may accumulate charge so as to quantify the output of the ionization balance device. A switch (29) may be used to discharge the first conductor at periodic intervals in order to measure the accumulated charge on the first conductor, and signal processing may be performed on this discharge measurement in order to generate feedback that can be used to control and adjust the output of an ion source.
